Narmadapuram Observes Santan Saptami

On the seventh day of the Bhadrapada month, women in Narmadapuram celebrated the festival of Santan Saptami with immense faith and devotion. Married women observed a day-long fast without food or water, performing rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Surya.

The primary prayers were for the happy future, excellent health, and long life of their children. The fervor of this religious observance was particularly visible at the Ganesh Pandal in Gaur Colony, Narmadapuram, where many women gathered to perform the puja and religious ceremonies. A sense of special joy permeated the atmosphere among the women celebrating the festival.

Significance of Santan Saptami

Local resident Nirmala Rathore explained the significance of the festival, stating that it is an ancient tradition to worship Lord Surya, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Shiva on Santan Saptami. It is believed that observing the fast and performing the puja with complete devotion on this day can bless childless couples with offspring.

Furthermore, it is believed to bestow blessings of longevity, happiness, and prosperity upon existing children. Rathore added that this fast is also a prayer for the removal of obstacles and hardships in a child's life, which is why married women undertake it with utmost sincerity, praying for family happiness and their children's safety. This festival is considered crucial for family peace and a bright future for children.

Observance and Rituals

The festival is celebrated on the seventh day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) of the Bhadrapada month. Women observing the fast rise before sunrise, complete their ablutions, and take a vow for the fast. They then establish idols or images of Shiva-Parvati and Lord Surya and perform their worship using the Shodashopachara method.

The worship includes offerings such as Bilva leaves, incense, lamps, unbroken rice grains (akshat), flowers, fruits, and sweets. The main objective of the Santan Saptami fast is to protect children and pray for their long lives. It is believed that the influence of this fast not only increases a child's lifespan but also brings happiness and prosperity into their lives.

Community Celebration in Gaur Colony

The puja organized in Gaur Colony saw the participation of many women together, enhancing the significance of the collective worship. Women exchanged festival greetings and collectively prayed for conception and the bright future of their children. The Ganesh Pandal was specially decorated, and devotional singing (bhajan-kirtan) was also organized.

Pundits present on the occasion elaborated on the method and importance of the fast. They explained that this fast symbolizes purity of mind and unwavering faith in God, which ultimately leads to the attainment of desired fruits. The ceremony fostered a spirit of community and shared blessings for the well-being of the younger generation.
