Kharif Crops Under Threat from Unannounced Power Cuts

In rural Madhya Pradesh, a severe problem of unannounced power cuts and low voltage has put crucial Kharif season crops in jeopardy. Insufficient power availability during the critical phases of paddy transplantation and irrigation for other Kharif crops has led to fields drying up, increasing farmers' concerns.

Farmers from various regions across the state, including Bhind, Gohad, Seoni Malwa, and Amla, have been demanding improvements in power supply for a long time. Farmer organizations are submitting memorandums and staging protests at power offices to press their demands.

Farmers have warned that they will be compelled to resort to intense agitation if their demands are not met promptly. Farmers are worried about the unavailability of electricity during irrigation hours, which is essential for the health and production of major Kharif crops like paddy, soybean, and maize.

Low Voltage Hinders Tube Well Operations

Even where electricity is supplied, low voltage has become a new ordeal for farmers. Due to insufficient voltage, tube wells, submersible pumps, and irrigation motors are not operating at their full capacity. In many places, motors repeatedly shut down, or the water output is too slow for adequate irrigation.

Farmers state that despite paying electricity bills regularly, they are not receiving quality power supply. This issue is not only increasing farming costs but also poses a risk of negatively impacting production. Crops are deteriorating, and economic losses loom large.

Dilapidated Power System and Equipment Malfunctions

Several key reasons contribute to the recurring power supply disruptions in rural areas. In many locations, power lines are decades old, lines are weak, and transformers frequently fail due to overloading. The lack of timely repair of faulty equipment leads to continuous faults, disrupting power supply.

Farmers also allege that despite registering complaints with the electricity department, problem resolution is excessively delayed, prolonging their hardship.

Farmer Protests and Ultimatum

In protest against the power crisis, farmers in various districts of the state have begun demonstrating against electricity distribution companies and relevant administrative officials. In many places, they have gheraoed electricity offices and submitted memorandums regarding their demands to local officials.

The primary demands of the farmers include ensuring uninterrupted power supply in rural areas, immediate resolution of the low voltage problem, prompt replacement of faulty transformers and dilapidated lines, provision of adequate electricity at scheduled times for irrigation, and a complete halt to unannounced power cuts.

Farmer organizations in several districts have issued a three-day ultimatum to the administration and the electricity department. They have warned that if the system does not improve within this period, they will be forced to launch blockades, protests, and larger public movements.

Farmers assert that agriculture is already grappling with rising costs, weather uncertainties, and market challenges, and this power crisis is exacerbating their difficulties.

Impact of Growing Power Crisis on Agriculture

Experts believe that a regular and adequate power supply is crucial for agricultural production during the Kharif season. If irrigation continues to be affected, it will not only lead to a decrease in crop production but will also have a direct and severe impact on farmers' incomes.

In this context, farmers' demand for the state government and electricity distribution companies to bring about immediate improvements in the rural power system is justified, ensuring timely water reaches the fields and the farmers' hard work and standing crops are protected. An effective action plan is needed to ensure this.
