SC to Hear Delhi Pollution, Firecracker Sale Today

The Cliff News | 29 October 2026

The Supreme Court is set to convene today, Thursday, to deliberate on critical issues surrounding the escalating pollution levels in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). The proceedings will also address the persistent problem of stubble burning and the potential sale of ‘green’ firecrackers in the lead-up to the Diwali festival.

This significant hearing comes at a time of heightened concern over the deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR. Authorities and citizens alike are seeking effective measures to mitigate pollution, particularly during the festive season when such challenges are often exacerbated. The court is expected to scrutinize various aspects related to firecracker manufacturing and usage, alongside other strategies aimed at curbing the region’s pervasive pollution crisis.

Current Firecracker Regulations

Under a standing order from the Supreme Court, a complete prohibition remains in effect on the manufacture, storage, and use of all types of firecrackers across the Delhi-NCR. This stringent measure was implemented as part of broader efforts to combat the region's severe air pollution and to prevent activities that could further compromise air quality.

Limited Relaxation for Green Crackers

During a previous judicial review, the Supreme Court had signaled a potential for limited leniency regarding firecracker regulations. The court had previously permitted firecracker manufacturers to produce ‘green’ firecrackers specifically for the Delhi-NCR area. However, it was explicitly stated that this permission for production did not automatically translate into permission for sale.

The apex court had clarified that while the manufacturing of these environmentally friendlier firecrackers could be allowed, their sale would not be permitted at that particular juncture. Consequently, the crucial aspect of authorizing the sale of green firecrackers is anticipated to be a focal point of today's proceedings, especially with Diwali approaching.

Government Mandate for Policy Formulation

In a related directive, the Supreme Court had also mandated the Central Government to engage in comprehensive consultations with all relevant stakeholders. The objective is to collaboratively develop and formulate a balanced policy concerning the manufacturing and use of firecrackers within the Delhi-NCR. This underscores the court's emphasis on finding sustainable solutions.

Previously, the apex court had also conveyed its view that fostering public awareness and encouraging voluntary participation might prove more effective in tackling firecracker-induced air pollution in Delhi-NCR. This approach is considered potentially more successful than imposing restrictive orders that could prove challenging to enforce effectively on the ground.
