JEE Advanced sees more SC, ST, and women qualifiers

The Cliff News | 5 October 2026

The latest JEE Advanced examination results have highlighted a notable demographic shift among successful candidates, with substantial increases observed in the number of qualifiers from Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities, as well as women. This evolving composition of qualifying students points to a potentially broader access to prestigious engineering programs.

The figures from the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report, released by IIT Roorkee, indicate a significant upswing for SC candidates, with the number of qualifiers surging from 12,499 in the previous year to 15,856 in 2026. Similarly, the ST category saw a considerable rise, with qualifiers increasing from 5,008 to 6,379. Both categories experienced a growth of approximately 27 percent in successful candidates.

Increased Female Participation

Women candidates also achieved a record high in qualification rates. The examination saw a 23.4 percent qualification rate among women, which is the highest recorded in the six-year span covered by the JIC report. This marks a significant milestone in the participation and success of female students in one of India's most competitive engineering entrance exams.

Overall Pool Growth Marginally

In contrast to the sharp increases in specific demographic groups, the overall number of qualifying candidates saw a more modest expansion. The total pool of successful students grew from 54,378 to 56,880. This marginal overall increase, when viewed against the substantial gains in SC, ST, and women qualifiers, underscores that the primary change lies not in the sheer size of the qualifying pool, but in its increasingly diverse composition.

Implications for Engineering Admissions

The shift in demographics is likely to have a significant impact on the admission landscape for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other premier engineering institutions. A larger representation from underrepresented communities and women could lead to more diverse perspectives within engineering classrooms and the future workforce. This trend aligns with ongoing national efforts to promote inclusivity and equal opportunity in higher education and technical fields.
