Successful Initial Phase for India's Hydrogen Train

The first hydrogen fuel cell train developed by Indian Railways has achieved notable success in its initial operational phase. Flagged off on July 17, 2026, on the Jind–Sonipat rail section of the Delhi division, this ambitious project has successfully completed over 1,200 kilometers of travel.

During this period, the train has saved more than 3,200 liters of diesel, marking a significant achievement in environmental conservation. This indigenously developed hydrogen train generates electricity internally through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.

The primary benefit of this technology is that its only byproduct is water vapor, meaning no smoke or carbon emissions are released from the tailpipe. This makes it one of the cleanest rail propulsion technologies currently available.

Indigenous Innovation and Technical Specifications

This project is a fully indigenous initiative led by Indian Railways, reinforcing the spirit of 'Make in India'. The 10-coach train is equipped with two hydrogen driving power cars, capable of jointly providing 2,400 kW of power.

Additionally, the train features lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders, enhancing its operational capabilities. The focus on indigenous development highlights India's growing technological prowess in the railway sector.

Jind Hydrogen Storage Facility

A crucial component of this project is India's first dedicated hydrogen storage facility established at Jind. This facility can store green hydrogen at a pressure of up to 500 Bar and provides refueling at 350 Bar.

The modern facility has a total storage capacity of approximately 3,000 kilograms, ensuring the smooth operation of the train. The establishment of this facility is vital for the scalability of hydrogen-powered trains.

Strict Adherence to Safety Standards

The safety of the hydrogen train has been given the highest priority. The train is equipped with multiple independent safety systems capable of automatically detecting hydrogen leaks, excessive temperatures, fire, and smoke.

These systems are complemented by automatic shut-off mechanisms, continuous ventilation, strict adherence to international safety standards, and the assurance of all mandatory tests and verifications. Following its successful operation on the Jind–Sonipat rail section, the train's testing will soon commence on the Delhi route for a more comprehensive evaluation of its performance.
