Farmers Unite for Better Support and Compensation
Hundreds of farmers converged at the Bareilly Commissioner's office for a large 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' (Farmers' Grand Assembly) to address pressing agricultural issues. Organized under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Arajnaitik), the demonstration aimed to pressure the government regarding their demands.
Key Demands Presented to Administration
With Youth State President Chaudhary Digambar Singh as the chief guest, and led by Rohilkhand President Chaudhary Arun Singh Rathi and District President Tejpal Gangwar, officials presented a detailed memorandum to the Additional Divisional Commissioner addressed to the Chief Minister. The primary demand is to increase the minimum support price for sugarcane to ₹500 per quintal, arguing that the current price does not cover production costs, leading to financial losses.
Compensation for Unseasonal Rains and Insurance Woes
The memorandum also highlighted the extensive damage to paddy crops caused by recent unseasonal rains. Farmers are seeking adequate and immediate compensation from the government to stabilize their economic situation. The protest also vehemently raised the issue of delayed insurance payments by insurance companies, accusing them of deliberately stalling disbursements.
Against Corruption and Bank Harassment
Farmers also demanded an immediate cessation of harassment by banks, alleging unfair pressure tactics. Deep concern was expressed over the prevailing corruption in tehsils, with a clear call for its curbing to ensure government schemes reach farmers directly without undue hardship. The presence of District President of the Women's Wing Dr. Poonam Gangwar, Vice President Thakur Rajan Singh, and Regional Vice President of Youth Shekhar Singh, along with numerous other officials and activists, underscored the widespread support for the cause.
Administration Assures Action, Farmers Warn of Escalation
The Additional Divisional Commissioner accepted the memorandum and assured action as per rules. However, farmer leaders issued a stern warning: if their demands are not addressed promptly and appropriate action is not taken, they will escalate their agitation, potentially taking it to a national level.
