DGP Makwana Equips Young IPS Officers with Effective Policing Leadership Skills

Effective Policing Leadership Emphasized

Director General of Police, Shri Kailash Makwana, addressed 10 Assistant Superintendents of Police (IPS) officers who recently completed their training. He stated that the hallmark of effective police leadership lies in providing prompt relief to the public and offering proper guidance to subordinates.

During a courtesy meeting at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal, DGP Shri Makwana engaged in in-depth discussions with the young officers on various critical aspects of police administration, supervision, and ground-level operations. The DGP clarified that as Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), they are the first supervisory officers of the police system, making their role paramount in enhancing policing effectiveness.

Prioritizing Public Grievances

The DGP underscored that resolving the complaints of the general public is one of the primary responsibilities of the police. He advised that a victim's complaint should be understood with seriousness at the initial stage, and efforts should be made for its swift resolution to provide immediate relief to people.

Integrity and Impartiality in Leadership

Shri Makwana stressed the extreme importance of effective supervision coupled with integrity and impartiality for police leadership. He urged the young officers to regularly review the work of their subordinates, understand their problems, and ensure their timely resolution. A good officer's duty, according to the DGP, is not limited to monitoring tasks but also includes motivating, guiding, and providing necessary support to subordinates, which enhances the organization's efficiency.

Station Inspections and CCTV Surveillance

The Director General of Police issued important directives regarding police station inspections. He emphasized paying close attention to the intricacies of police functioning during inspections. No individual should be unnecessarily detained, and it must be ensured that CCTV cameras installed in police stations are always operational and functional. This is a significant responsibility of the officers.

The DGP instructed officers to conduct regular and surprise inspections of police stations to ascertain the actual ground-level policing situation. He encouraged officers to actively participate in routine inspections conducted by senior officers and to learn the nuances of policing during this process. The DGP believes that practical understanding of policing develops through ground experience and the guidance of senior officers, which officers can leverage in their future service.

Leveraging Technology and NAFIS

DGP Shri Makwana also highlighted the growing importance of technology-driven policing. He stated that available technical resources should be effectively utilized in solving crimes and various cases. He specifically mentioned enhancing crime resolution by using technical assistance related to fingerprints obtained from systems like NAFIS (National Automated Fingerprint Identification System), which helps investigative agencies provide quick and accurate information.

Importance of Station Parade and Discipline

Acknowledging the importance of station parades in maintaining the smooth functioning of a police station, the DGP stated that regular parades ensure the presence of personnel, discipline, uniform maintenance, turnout, and dissemination of essential instructions. This not only boosts the morale of the force but also ensures that all officers and personnel are adhering to rules and directives.

Addressing Problems at Their Root

Various challenges and problems arise daily in police service. DGP Shri Makwana advised officers to delve into the root cause of problems rather than avoiding them and to strive for solutions within available resources and regulations. He also pointed out that leadership that addresses its subordinates' problems fosters trust and a better work culture within the organization.

On this occasion, Assistant Superintendents of Police shared their thoughts and queries on various subjects related to policing and leadership. DGP Shri Makwana, drawing from his vast experience, guided the officers' questions and inspired them to work with responsibility, discipline, and a positive outlook at every level of service.
