Accused Killed During Crime Scene Reenactment

Prabhas Mondal, the central suspect in the horrific Baruipur minor rape and murder case, was shot dead by police. The incident occurred late Tuesday night to Wednesday morning during a reconstruction of the crime scene.

Mondal was taken to Suryapur in Baruipur around 12:45 a.m. for the crucial reenactment. During the process, he reportedly attempted to snatch a firearm and escape custody.

Police Claim Self-Defence

According to police statements, officers retaliated in self-defence after Mondal allegedly fired one round. He sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to Baruipur Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mondal was identified as a key suspect after being seen with the victim in CCTV footage prior to the alleged rape and murder. He was one of three initial arrests in the case, along with Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar.

Political Fallout and Family Reaction

The police encounter has ignited controversy. TMC MP Mahua Moitra criticized the incident on X, labelling it as reflecting "jungle law" in West Bengal and questioning the state administration and the BJP's role.

"Baruipur rape murder accused Prabhash Mondal killed in encounter! What is going on @WBPolice? Bengalis please welcome new Bengal-Uttar Pradesh 2.0. @BJP4Bengal is no government. This is jungle law," Moitra posted.

In a stark reaction, Sandhya Mondal, Prabhas Mondal's mother, refused to claim her son's body. She stated that he received the consequences of his actions and expressed that she did not wish to see him or claim his remains.

She also revealed that her son had long struggled with addiction and had disregarded her advice.

Further Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Meanwhile, police have arrested another accused, Kabir Molla, from Basirhat, North 24 Parganas district. Molla had been absconding since the crime occurred and was brought to Baruipur for interrogation.

This arrest brings the total number of accused in the rape-murder case to four. The victim, who went missing on July 4, was found dead in a sack the following day, sparking significant local protests.

Earlier, an unidentified man was beaten to death by angry locals on suspicion of involvement in the girl's death, though Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later stated this individual was innocent.

Community Outcry and Official Response

The recovery of the 11-year-old girl's body led to widespread local anger, with protestors blocking roads, burning tyres, and damaging police vehicles. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the case.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had previously directed the Director General of Police to submit a report on the rape-murder case. He also indicated that action would be taken against approximately 200 identified individuals involved in vandalizing public property during the protests.

What to Watch Next

The investigation into the rape and murder case will continue with the remaining arrested individuals. Further scrutiny is expected regarding the circumstances of Prabhas Mondal's death and the police's conduct. The legal proceedings for the other accused are anticipated to unfold in the coming weeks.
