Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the newly constructed Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, August 1, 2026. This ambitious project, built at a cost of approximately 5,000 crore rupees, is set to usher in a new era for the state's civil aviation sector, aiming to strengthen air connectivity in North Andhra Pradesh and boost regional development.

During the event, the Prime Minister also presented Andhra Pradesh with other significant development projects valued at over 17,900 crore rupees. Located in Bhogapuram, the international airport is expected not only to enhance passenger convenience but also to play a crucial role in creating new opportunities for tourism, trade, industry, and employment.

Modern Facilities and Future Capacity

The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport has been constructed incorporating state-of-the-art facilities and with future demands in mind. In its initial phase, the airport will have an annual passenger handling capacity of approximately 60 lakh passengers. Plans are in place to expand this capacity to nearly 4 crore passengers in the future, anticipating a rise in passenger traffic and ensuring the airport can effectively meet growing air traffic needs.

The expansion of modern infrastructure is a top priority for the central government. Enhanced air connectivity acts as a significant catalyst for the economic development of any region.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the new airport is expected to significantly bolster Andhra Pradesh's business, tourism, and investment environment, thereby improving the state's overall economic landscape. The airport is poised to become a major aviation hub in South India.

Honoring a Freedom Fighter

This international airport is named in honor of the great freedom fighter and tribal leader, Alluri Sitarama Raju. He is remembered for leading the Rampa Rebellion against British rule and is a symbol of struggle and nationalism in the history of Andhra Pradesh. The naming of this vital airport after him also connects it to the region's cultural and historical identity, reflecting respect for local heritage.

The operationalization of the Bhogapuram Airport is widely expected to bring direct benefits to Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas.
