Pandit Rudra Shankar Mishra Enthralls Students with Kathak Expressions

Kathak Workshop Held at St. Xavier's School

A special Kathak workshop was organized at St. Xavier's Senior Secondary School in Balrampur on August 8, 2026, to promote the rich tradition of Indian classical dance. The event, a joint initiative by St. Xavier's and SPIC MACAY, featured Pandit Rudra Shankar Mishra, a distinguished fourth-generation Kathak artist from the Banaras Gharana, as the chief guest.

During the workshop, Pandit Mishra introduced students to the enchanting world of Kathak dance. Lt. (Dr.) Devendra Chauhan, an official from SPIC MACAY, was also present. Pandit Mishra, considered a highly reputable name in the field of youth arts, familiarized students with the depth of Indian classical music and dance through his performance.

A Glimpse into Pandit Mishra's Artistic Lineage

Pandit Rudra Shankar Mishra, a young torchbearer of Kathak, is a disciple of the esteemed Guru Acharya Sukhdev Maharaj. He is the son of renowned Kathak critic and Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy awardee Pandit Mata Prasad Mishra, and the nephew and disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar Mishra.

Having started his Kathak training at the tender age of five, Pandit Mishra has brought honor to Indian culture through continuous practice and outstanding performances. His talent has been recognized with the prestigious Central Youth Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from the Government of India, a significant achievement for any young artist.

Recognitions and Contributions

In addition to his accolades, Pandit Mishra is a graded artist with Doordarshan and an empanelled artist with SPIC MACAY, actively promoting Indian classical dance across the country. Numerous distinguished honors, including the Sahitya Shree Samman, Kala Gaurav Samman, Bal Adhyeta Puraskar, Rashtriya Yuva Mahotsav Puraskar, and a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, are testaments to his artistic excellence.

Workshop Inauguration and Performance

The workshop commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by chief guest Pandit Rudra Shankar Mishra, along with the school's Directress Mrs. Sujata Anand, Ishika Anand, and Principal Dr. Krishna Mohan. Following this, the school children presented a 'Vandana' (prayer) to Goddess Saraswati. The stage was skillfully managed by school teacher Sanjay Tomar.

During the workshop, Pandit Rudra Shankar Mishra mesmerized the students with his renditions of various Kathak techniques. His accompanists on tabla and vocals, Uday Shankar Mishra and Raghavendra Sharma, also captivated the audience with their artistry. The children thoroughly appreciated the performance and even joined in for brief jugalbandis (duets) with the artists.

Honors and Gratitude

At the conclusion of the program, the school's Co-Directress Mrs. Sujata Anand, Directress Mrs. Ishika Anand, and Principal Dr. Krishna Mohan honored the chief guest and other dignitaries with shawls and mementos.

Principal Dr. Krishna Mohan expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the guests, members of the managing committee, and everyone who contributed to the successful organization of the event. Teachers such as Aman Jaiswal, Manmohan Ojha, Laik Ansari, Sanjay Tomar, and D.N. Shukla played crucial roles in the program's success.
