Pioneering Support for Tribal Agriculture in Amargarh

In a significant stride towards equipping farmers with modern agricultural resources, a new center has been established in Amargarh, a predominantly tribal village in the Gwalior district. The farmer resource center, set up by the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram, Jaura, was formally inaugurated by Rajgopal P.V., founder of Ekta Parishad and a renowned Gandhian social activist.

Established with the support of Parivartan and HDFC Bank, this center is dedicated to empowering local tribal communities in the field of agriculture. The inauguration ceremony saw a large turnout of tribal men and women, who welcomed the guests with traditional warmth.

Decades of Struggle Culminate in Empowerment

Speaking at the event, Rajgopal P.V. highlighted that the tribal communities of Amargarh have long struggled for their basic rights and entitlements. He specifically remembered the contributions of Basanti Bai and other villagers who played an active role in Ekta Parishad's marches and movements.

Their persistent efforts have resulted in land ownership rights for many families in Amargarh, covering approximately 350 bighas. These families are now cultivating their land to secure their livelihoods. He emphasized that the primary objective of this resource center is to ensure the optimal utilization of this land and to increase farmers' income after securing their rights.

From Land Rights to Livelihood Security

Dunger Sharma, Ekta Parishad's State Convener, provided a detailed account of the movements for land, forest, and water rights in the region since 2007. He mentioned that the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram is continuously working on water conservation and providing essential agricultural resources to farmers.

Sitaram Sonwani, President of Chhattisgarh Mahatma Gandhi Prayog Ashram, stressed that alongside the fight for tribal rights, strengthening livelihoods and agriculture is now a pressing need. He commended the farmer resource center as a meaningful endeavor in this direction.

The struggle for land rights was more than just a legal victory; it was a crucial milestone for these communities to establish their identity and economic independence. The movements initiated in 2007 were instrumental in securing land ownership for tribal inhabitants, freeing them from years of uncertainty.

Keeping this in mind, the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram addressed fundamental issues like water conservation and connected farmers with modern agricultural practices and equipment. Modern Farming Equipment to Accelerate Agricultural Productivity

Roop Singh Aadivasi, President of the local Ekta Committee, stated that the establishment of this new resource center will eliminate the need for villagers to travel elsewhere for agricultural work. The center is equipped with modern machinery such as tractors, sprayers, and cultivators.

These resources will be utilized through the Ekta Committee, reducing the costs and labor for small and marginal farmers. This is expected to boost their productivity and enable them to engage in more profitable farming. The availability of modern agricultural machinery marks a significant shift from traditional farming methods.

These tools will not only reduce manual labor but also enhance precision and efficiency in tasks like sowing, plowing, and crop protection. This facility will be particularly beneficial for small and marginal farmers who cannot afford such expensive equipment individually. By making these tools available on rent through the Ekta Committee, all farmers can benefit.

This will not only lower their production costs but also allow them to cultivate more land in less time, potentially increasing their income. Furthermore, modern sprayers will facilitate the balanced use of pesticides and fertilizers, which is better for both soil health and crop quality. This step will lead farmers towards a more sustainable and profitable agricultural future.

Present at the occasion were Dilip Jain, Secretary of Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram, Prafull Shrivastava, Joint Secretary, Anil Kumar Gupta, Sarpanch of Bagwala Shiv Singh Gurjar, Advocate Dinesh Singh Sikwar, and Devendra Bana, along with numerous social activists. During the program, villagers shared their experiences of struggles and the rights they are currently receiving. They expressed hope that this resource center will modernize their farming and increase their income, thereby improving their living standards. This center will be a landmark for the farmers in the region, playing a significant role in strengthening their economic condition.
