Essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B12, folate, zinc, vitamin A, and iodine directly affect the body's normal functioning, bone strength, blood formation, muscle health, nervous system efficiency, and immune system. Alarmingly, an individual can simultaneously suffer from multiple nutrient deficiencies, with symptoms often not apparent in the early stages.

Data from the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) underscores the severity of this problem. According to the survey, approximately 24 percent of adolescents aged 10-14 years were found to be deficient in iron, 26 percent in vitamin B12, 36 percent in folate, 19 percent in vitamin A, 35 percent in vitamin D, and 27 percent in zinc. This clearly illustrates that adequate calorie intake alone is insufficient for health; a balanced intake of essential vitamins and minerals in the diet is critically important.

Nutritional Risks Vary with Age

As an individual's age progresses, their nutritional risks also change. Infants under five years of age are at higher risk of deficiencies in iron, vitamin A, D, zinc, B12, and folate due to rapid physical growth and reliance on the quality of complementary foods.

In school-aged children aged five to nine years, deficiencies in nutrients like iron, vitamin D, B12, folate, zinc, and vitamin A are commonly observed, often due to changes in eating habits and imbalanced diets.

Adolescence, particularly the age group of 10 to 19 years, is a critical phase of physical development with significantly increased nutritional demands. During this period, rapid physical changes require adequate amounts of various nutrients. Adolescent girls are at a considerably higher risk of iron deficiency due to blood loss during menstruation.

Meanwhile, the importance of adequate nutrition also increases for adolescent boys due to their rapid physical development.

Challenges in Young Adults and Middle Age

Young adults may continue to face risks of vitamin D, B12, iron, folate, and calcium deficiencies. Notably, individuals following vegetarian or vegan diets are at a higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, as it is primarily found in animal-based products.

Additionally, those who spend most of their time indoors and have limited sun exposure may experience higher rates of vitamin D deficiency. In middle age, deficiencies in vitamin D, B12, calcium, and folate are often encountered.

For women, particularly those of reproductive age, the risk of iron deficiency due to menstruation persists for a longer duration. During pregnancy, maintaining adequate levels of folate and vitamin B12 is crucial for the health of both the mother and the fetus.

Long-term deficiencies in vitamin D and calcium can affect bone health, increasing the risk of conditions like osteoporosis.

Increased Risks and Gender Differences in Old Age

For individuals over 60 years of age, the risk of micronutrient deficiencies significantly increases. Deficiencies in vitamin D, B12, calcium, folate, iron, and zinc are common in this age group.

Several factors contribute to this, including reduced food intake, limited sun exposure, and a decrease in the body's ability to absorb nutrients with age. Nutritional risks also differ between men and women.

Women, from adolescence through reproductive age, face a higher risk of iron deficiency compared to men due to menstrual losses. In men, if iron deficiency is detected without a clear cause, a thorough medical investigation for bleeding or other underlying reasons is necessary, rather than solely administering iron supplements.

However, men with inadequate dietary intake can also experience deficiencies in vitamin D, B12, folate, and zinc.

Importance of Micronutrients in Specific Health Conditions

The role of micronutrients is particularly significant in the fields of orthopedics and preventive medicine. For the diagnosis and treatment of bone and muscle-related issues, tests for vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, magnesium, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and alkaline phosphatase may be necessary.

Similarly, for individuals suffering from fatigue, anemia, or neurological symptoms, testing complete blood count (CBC), ferritin, transferrin saturation, vitamin B12, and folate levels is beneficial. In children, if they exhibit slow growth, frequent infections, or delayed wound healing, a medical evaluation of zinc, iron, and vitamin A levels is important.

For the elderly struggling with issues like falls, weakness, or osteoporosis, tests for vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, B12, folate, PTH, and kidney function may be relevant.

Diagnosis and Solutions: A Balanced Approach

It is important to understand that routine testing for every micronutrient is not necessary for everyone. The decision to test should be based on an individual's age, diet, existing symptoms, presence of any illness, medications being taken, and other medical risk factors.

Taking nutrient supplements for prolonged periods without medical advice or diagnosis is not advisable, as it can lead to other problems. The solution to micronutrient deficiencies is not limited to medications or supplements.

A balanced and diverse diet, including a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and dairy products (or their alternatives), is the most natural and effective way to replenish nutrients. Additionally, adequate sun exposure (especially for vitamin D) and a healthy lifestyle play a significant role.

Timely identification and remediation of these nutrient deficiencies can significantly reduce serious health risks such as anemia, bone weakness, muscle problems, and neurological complications. For a healthy body, not only the quantity of food but also its nutritional quality is equally important.
