Madhya Pradesh Bans Analog Paneer Production and Sale

Following strict directives from Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the state's Food Safety Department has launched a statewide campaign.

This campaign involves intensive inspections and raids on dairies, paneer manufacturing units, hotels, restaurants, and other establishments across various districts. During these actions, significant quantities of suspected raw materials and finished analog paneer products are being seized.

Understanding Analog Paneer

Analog paneer, often referred to as a 'paneer-like product,' differs from traditional dairy paneer. Its production primarily uses vegetable oil or fat, starch, synthetic protein, and other non-dairy ingredients instead of milk. Its texture and appearance can be so similar to genuine paneer that distinguishing between the two is extremely difficult for the average consumer.

The consumption of this adulterated or artificial product poses a serious health risk to consumers, as its ingredients may not comply with food safety standards. This can lead to severe health issues if the materials used are not food-grade or the manufacturing process is unhygienic.

Economic Temptation and Dual Health Crisis

The primary attraction behind the manufacturing and sale of analog paneer is its significantly lower cost. While high-quality, milk-based dairy paneer is priced in the market at approximately ₹450 to ₹470 per kilogram, analog paneer is available for just ₹200 to ₹220 per kilogram.

This substantial price difference is particularly appealing to traders, especially within hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and catering businesses, where there is pressure to keep costs low. Consequently, unsuspecting consumers are often made to consume this artificial product, believing it to be genuine dairy paneer, which presents a serious health risk.

Chief Minister's Directives and Crackdown

Taking a serious view of this issue, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has emphasized promoting pure and natural milk and dairy products in the state. He has issued directives for stringent and decisive action against adulterated and artificial products.

In light of the Chief Minister's instructions, Food Safety Department officials have become active and have intensified raiding operations in Bhopal, Indore, and several other districts. Samples of suspected raw materials and finished products have been collected during preliminary investigations and are being sent to laboratories. Further legal action will be decided only after the examination reports of these samples are received.

Focus Extends Beyond Manufacturing Units to Consumption Points

The government's action is not confined solely to paneer manufacturing units. Food Safety officers are now keeping a close watch on all establishments where paneer is consumed in large quantities.

The quality and source of paneer used by hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and catering service providers are also being thoroughly investigated. The main objective of this surveillance is to ensure that consumers are not served any product in the name of 'real dairy paneer' whose chemical composition and quality standards differ from genuine dairy paneer.

Expert Opinions on Food Safety

Experts believe that the safety of any food product depends on its manufacturing process, the ingredients used, and proper labeling. While the low price of analog paneer may be attractive, selling it as genuine paneer is a direct act of misleading consumers and jeopardizing their health.

If the ingredients used do not comply with food safety standards or the manufacturing process is unhygienic, it can lead to serious health problems. This underscores the importance of transparency and adherence to regulations in food production.

Madhya Pradesh Follows in the Footsteps of Other States

With the Madhya Pradesh government's recent decision, it is expected that the control over the manufacturing, storage, and sale of analog paneer in the state will become even stricter. The Food Safety Department has also appealed to consumers to exercise extreme caution when purchasing paneer.

For packaged products, it is essential to carefully read the ingredients, manufacturer's name, and other details. Consumers are encouraged to immediately report any suspicion regarding the quality of excessively cheap paneer sold in the open market to the relevant food safety authorities.
