Jabalpur: Civic Centre Public Toilet Encroached by Momos Vendor, Citizens Suffer

Encroachment Near Civic Bodies

In a significant commercial hub of Jabalpur city, the Civic Centre, a public toilet facility situated extremely close to the Municipal Corporation headquarters and the Anti-Encroachment Branch office has been unauthorizedly occupied by a momos and tikka vendor. This government facility, meant for the convenience of the general public, especially women and senior citizens, has been used by the fast-food vendor as a storage space for their business for a considerable time.

The situation is particularly concerning as the relevant offices are located a mere 100 meters away. This encroachment has led to the storage of domestic gas cylinders, large utensils, plastic chairs, iron tables, and food items within the public toilet premises. The vendor reportedly parks their mobile cart at the building's entrance daily and fills the rooms with goods before locking them up privately after daily business.

Daily Inconvenience and Traffic Chaos

This commercial use is causing severe inconvenience to approximately 500 visitors who frequent the park daily. Beyond the encroached toilet, more than a dozen other unauthorized chaat and snack stalls are operating around the accessible toilet complex, further obstructing traffic. These stalls cause the 30-foot-wide main road to be blocked by over 100 haphazardly parked vehicles throughout the day, leading to continuous traffic disruption.

A significant portion of the road has been reduced to just 12 feet due to these stalls, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. Citizens allege that such an encroachment, despite the regular presence of the Zone office's patrol teams and encroachment squads, would not be possible without departmental complicity. Despite repeated complaints from local shopkeepers to the concerned inspectors, no site inspection or seizure action has been taken to date.

Citizens Demand Immediate Action

The apathy of those responsible has sparked strong resentment among the general public. With the public toilet remaining closed, heaps of garbage have accumulated in surrounding open areas, increasing the risk of infectious disease outbreaks. Citizens have demanded immediate action from the administration to seal the illegally occupied property and restore the toilet for public use, ensuring a permanent solution to this pressing problem.
