A new leak originating from Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station indicates that Apple's upcoming iPhone Air 2 will see significant upgrades, particularly in its camera and battery capabilities. These enhancements aim to address compromises made in the original iPhone Air's pursuit of an exceptionally slim design.
The successor is expected to sport a dual rear camera setup, a notable departure from the single lens on the first-generation model. This change could significantly bolster the device's photography prowess, offering greater flexibility for various shooting scenarios.
Camera and Display Enhancements
Digital Chat Station's report suggests the iPhone Air 2 will feature a 48MP primary camera alongside a second 48MP ultrawide shooter. This dual-camera configuration is anticipated to make the device a more practical choice for photographers, especially for capturing expansive landscapes and group photographs.
In terms of display, the iPhone Air 2 is rumored to retain a premium experience. It is expected to feature a 6.55-inch flat OLED display with a 1.5K+ resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The panel is also tipped to incorporate LTPO technology, mirroring the advanced ProMotion display found in its predecessor.
Battery and Performance Upgrades
A key area of improvement for the iPhone Air 2 is its battery. Reports suggest a battery capacity of around 3,500mAh or more, a substantial increase from the original iPhone Air's 3,149mAh cell. While still considered compact compared to other flagship devices, this upgrade promises improved battery life for users.
Under the hood, the iPhone Air 2 is expected to be powered by Apple's next-generation A20-series chipset, reportedly manufactured on a 2nm process. Further upgrades are anticipated with the inclusion of the N2 wireless chipset and a C2 modem, suggesting enhanced connectivity and performance.
Design and Launch Timeline
Despite these internal upgrades, the iPhone Air 2 is expected to maintain its predecessor's ultra-slim profile. The reported thickness is a mere 5.2 mm, a slight reduction from the original model's 5.64 mm. This commitment to a slim design continues to be a defining characteristic of the iPhone Air line.
Apple is reportedly targeting a spring 2027 launch for the iPhone Air 2, potentially alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models. This positioning could see the iPhone Air 2 as the sole ultra-thin flagship smartphone available that year, giving Apple a distinct advantage in its niche market.
The original iPhone Air launched in India at Rs 1,19,900, emphasizing its slim titanium design and powerful chipset. However, its single rear camera and smaller battery were noted compromises. The anticipated price for the iPhone Air 2 could see an increase due to the addition of a second camera, larger battery, and newer components, alongside potential rising memory costs.
