India's highly anticipated festive shopping season has kicked off with unprecedented enthusiasm, as consumers quickly transformed sale notifications into purchases. Both major e-commerce players, Amazon and Flipkart, have reported a spectacular start, signalling strong consumer confidence and a significant shift in shopping patterns.
Amazon announced a remarkable 100 per cent year-on-year increase in product orders at the commencement of its Great Indian Festival 2026. Simultaneously, Flipkart achieved a staggering 6.3 million concurrent users within a single minute during the initial hour of its 13th Big Billion Days sale, highlighting an intense surge in online activity.
Dominant Demand Across Key Categories
Both platforms experienced robust early demand spanning critical retail segments, including smartphones, appliances, fashion, and beauty. A notable trend was the increased participation from shoppers in smaller towns and non-metro markets, indicating a broadening of e-commerce reach across the nation.
The initial success was further bolstered by the prominence of premium products, attractive financing options, competitive exchange offers, and an emphasis on faster deliveries. These elements appear to be key drivers for consumers looking to make significant purchases during the festive period.
Amazon's Strong Performance and Customer Engagement
Amazon's Great Indian Festival, which commenced on 8 October, saw customers from every pin code in India placing orders within the first 12 hours. This widespread engagement underscores the platform's extensive logistical capabilities and its appeal across diverse geographies.
During this initial 12-hour window, a significant one in two customers utilized equated monthly instalments (EMIs), demonstrating a preference for manageable payment solutions. Furthermore, one in three units purchased included cashback offers, adding to the value proposition. Prime members experienced enhanced savings, reporting over twice the amount saved compared to the corresponding period last year through exclusive Prime offers.
"Early customer engagement, order volumes, and delivery speeds have exceeded our expectations," stated Saurabh Srivastava, Vice President at Amazon India. He attributed this surge to a synergistic combination of discounts, bank offers, exchange programmes, and financing options that are effectively empowering customers to shop across major cities and smaller towns alike.
Surge in Premium and Electronics Sales
Electronics and home entertainment emerged as sectors with exceptionally sharp reported increases on Amazon. Sales of premium Android smartphones saw a substantial 70 per cent year-on-year rise. The demand for high-end devices was further exemplified by MacBook Neo sales, which reached an astonishing 65 times their regular daily levels.
Premium wearables also experienced a phenomenal uptake, selling at 80 times their usual daily rate. The home entertainment category witnessed an even more dramatic surge, with sales increasing 77-fold compared to a regular day. Larger televisions, specifically those measuring 55 inches or more, constituted 65 per cent of all television sales, while high-end home theatre systems sold at an exceptional 100 times their usual rate within the first 12 hours.
The large appliances segment also showed a strong performance, with sales reaching 50 times their regular-day levels. Premium front-load washing machines weighing nine kilograms or more sold at 80 times their usual rate, and refrigerator sales saw a remarkable 60-fold increase. These impressive multiples reflect the scale of the opening-day surge against Amazon's stated sales baselines for a regular day.
Fashion and Beauty: Consumers Refreshing Wardrobes
The robust demand extended beyond electronics, with significant contributions from the fashion and personal care segments. Amazon reported that fashion sales reached seven times the level of a regular day, with footwear selling at an impressive rate of seven pairs per second.
Within fashion, women's ethnic wear performed particularly well, selling at four times its usual rate. Men's shirts and T-shirts also saw a considerable boost, reaching five times their regular daily sales. These figures suggest that shoppers are leveraging festive discounts not only for essential purchases but also to refresh their wardrobes.
The beauty category accounted for a substantial portion of purchases, with one in every four products bought on Amazon.in during the first 12 hours being a beauty item. Sales of premium skincare and haircare products reached five times their usual daily levels, while luxury fragrances sold at four times their regular rate, indicating a strong consumer appetite for self-care and premium beauty items.
Flipkart's Big Billion Days Draw Massive Audience
Flipkart's Big Billion Days sale also garnered significant early traction, attracting a substantial audience. The platform's 13th edition saw over 6.3 million concurrent users in a single minute during its opening hour. More than six times as many Indians shopped on Flipkart during that hour compared to a regular hour.
The early-access event, which began at midnight on 8 October for eligible members, generated an impressive 287 million sessions. The company also reported a 34 per cent increase in new customers during this period, highlighting the sale's effectiveness in attracting first-time shoppers.
Growth in Smaller Markets and Category Performance
Smaller markets played a pivotal role in Flipkart's opening numbers, with customers from Tier 3 towns and smaller markets accounting for nearly half of all visits during the first hour. Non-metro locations collectively contributed approximately 60 per cent of the demand, underscoring the growing e-commerce penetration in these regions.
Category-level growth was also evident on Flipkart. Sales of large appliances rose by 30 per cent year on year during the opening hour, while tablet sales increased by an impressive 73 per cent. The beauty segment saw a climb of 42 per cent, with men's grooming and self-care products being significant contributors. At its peak, Flipkart sold over 1,600 men's perfumes per minute.
Smartphones Lead with Financing and Exchange Options
Smartphones continued to be a dominant category, with the availability of exchange offers and no-cost EMIs proving instrumental in making purchases more accessible. Flipkart reported that one in four customers opted for a product exchange, while one in three chose no-cost EMI options, reflecting a price-sensitive yet aspirational consumer base.
Quick Commerce and Innovative Shopping Experiences
Flipkart Minutes, the company's quick-commerce service, experienced a substantial surge, recording 3.5 times as many orders as on regular days during the opening hour. New customer acquisition on this service saw an extraordinary 11-fold increase.
The platform also showcased its rapid delivery capabilities with a notable instance of an iPhone 17 being delivered to a customer in New Delhi in just 3.4 minutes during the early access period. While this represents an individual achievement and not a typical delivery speed, it highlights the growing consumer expectation for rapid fulfillment in festive shopping.
Furthermore, Flipkart reported strong engagement with its video-led shopping initiatives. Over 1,000 hours of live commerce and more than 500,000 short-form videos attracted 12.7 million users to its integrated video and live-shopping experiences. This suggests a shift towards more immersive and interactive ways of discovering and purchasing products.
Voice Search and Gen Z Trends
Voice search emerged as another significant point of engagement, with approximately 64 per cent of users of this feature originating from Tier 2 cities and beyond. This trend indicates the adoption of modern search technologies in less urbanized areas.
Among Gen Z consumers, there was a notable increase in demand for personal style and self-care products. Beauty purchases rose by 48 per cent, and sales of watches grew by 42 per cent within this demographic, highlighting their focus on personal expression and well-being.
Merchant Growth and Marketplace Performance
The strong early momentum extended to merchants operating on Flipkart's marketplace. The company reported that 51 per cent of sellers who recorded transactions on the early-access day achieved twice their regular-day growth. Sellers based in Tier 2 cities and beyond, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), showed particularly strong growth, recording a 2.9-fold increase.
Outlook for the Festive Season
The initial results from both Amazon and Flipkart paint a picture of a vibrant festive season driven by a confluence of premium product demand, strategic financing solutions, and expanding participation from non-metropolitan markets. While these opening figures are highly encouraging, they represent the initial phase of extended sales events.
The ultimate success of the festive shopping period will depend on how sustained the demand remains throughout the remainder of the season. For now, both e-commerce giants have reported an exceptionally brisk start, with electronics, beauty, fashion, and the burgeoning quick commerce sector vying for consumer attention. The coming weeks will reveal whether this early rush translates into sustained sales momentum.
