UN Supports India's UNSC Reform Initiative at BRICS Summit

The United Nations has indirectly lent its support to India's push for comprehensive reforms in the UN Security Council (UNSC). UN Secretary-General's spokesperson, Stephen Dujarric, backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts, stated that the current UNSC structure does not reflect 21st-century realities and is in urgent need of reform.

Dujarric emphasized India's leadership role in building consensus for these reforms. He acknowledged the critical need for changes in the Security Council and other international bodies to align with global realities of 2026, rather than those of 1945.

During his remarks at the BRICS summit, Dujarric highlighted that the Secretary-General has consistently stressed the necessity of Security Council reform. He clarified this is not solely the current Secretary-General's view but has been a long-standing position held by his predecessors.

Dujarric underscored that the Security Council is the cornerstone of the UN's peace and security architecture.

UNSC's Current Structure vs. 21st Century Needs

Dujarric stated, “If you look at how the Council is currently constituted, with 5 permanent members, it does not reflect the realities of the 21st century. Whether it's the Security Council, international financial institutions, or all sorts of other international institutions, they should reflect the realities of 2026, not 1945.”

He added, “It is time that we adapt this organization to the realities of the world so that it can truly be representative and more effective.”

Dujarric's statement is considered significant as it directly corroborates the arguments Prime Minister Modi raised at the BRICS summit. Prime Minister Modi had asserted that the 'Global South' must become rule-makers, not just rule-takers, to ensure their fair representation in global decision-making processes.

Protecting the Interests of BRICS and the Global South

In the context of the BRICS summit, UN Secretary-General's spokesperson Stephen Dujarric stated that comprehensive reforms in international financial institutions, along with a more equitable global trade system, are essential for protecting the interests of the 'Global South'. He stressed that the global trade system should not be biased towards any particular bloc of countries, and all nations should have equal opportunities.

Dujarric reiterated the UN Secretary-General's strong support for global multilateralism. He expressed hope that countries would reach positive agreements among regional groups to de-escalate mutual tensions.

Highlighting the importance of BRICS, the spokesperson noted that the group represents a significant portion of the global population and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He praised India's presidency, describing it as extremely positive for bridge-building and advancing reforms in international institutions.

Uncompromising Fight Against Terrorism Advocated

On this occasion, Stephen Dujarric described terrorism as a global threat that all countries must combat together. He mentioned that the UN has various institutions and programs to assist member states in tackling terrorism.

Dujarric specifically emphasized that no double standards should be applied in the fight against terrorism, as its devastating consequences affect every country in the world.

Prime Minister Modi's Emphasis on UNSC Reforms

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the inaugural session of the annual BRICS summit, stated that reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) could no longer be delayed. He stressed that discussions on this matter should be brought within a defined timeline and clear outcomes.

“Today, the Global South stands at the forefront of global crises, but at the back of the line in decision-making processes. We must transform this 'pyramid of privilege' into a 'platform of partnership' – a platform where every country's voice is heard, every member has a stake, and human development is at the center of every effort.”

Prime Minister Modi also elaborated on the issue of representation in global financial institutions. He stated that voting power, leadership positions, and policy priorities within these institutions must be aligned with current economic realities. He further stressed that countries driving global economic growth should also have an equitable role in shaping global economic governance.
