Bolsonaro's Miami Arrival Follows Elaborate Cross-Border Operation

The Cliff News | 29 October 2026

Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated presidential candidate from Brazil, arrived in Miami on Wednesday following an elaborate operation that spanned multiple countries and involved allies of former US President Donald Trump and current Argentine President Javier Milei. The clandestine journey began after Bolsonaro lost the Brazilian presidential runoff election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The operation, detailed in reports, highlights the lengths to which Bolsonaro and his team went to circumvent a Brazilian Supreme Court order mandating the surrender of his passport within 24 hours due to a money-laundering investigation and barring him from leaving the country. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.

Concealed Departure and Decoy Maneuvers

The departure from Bolsonaro's Brasília home on Monday evening was marked by a carefully orchestrated ruse involving a convoy of four dark vehicles. These cars dispersed in different directions, creating confusion and making it difficult for journalists and observers to ascertain which vehicle carried the former candidate. This level of secrecy meant that even some of Bolsonaro's close associates in Washington and Brazil were initially unaware of his exact whereabouts.

By Tuesday afternoon, information began to surface, with allies reportedly informing reporters that Bolsonaro had reached Florida, despite him still being in Brazil at that time. The Wall Street Journal reported that concerns about potential arrest intensified on Monday, prompted by the court's travel restriction order which exacerbated pre-existing legal troubles.

International Transit via Private Jet

The journey to the United States involved a cross-border transfer through Argentina and Ecuador. Bolsonaro, accompanied by his wife and two daughters, traveled by road towards Argentina. Argentine authorities confirmed their crossing into Puerto Iguazú via the Tancredo Neves International Bridge late Tuesday evening. Their vehicle was escorted by Argentine airport security police to the immigration checkpoint at Iguazú Falls International Airport.

A senior aide to Argentine President Javier Milei, Santiago Caputo, was reportedly monitoring and coordinating the operation with Eduardo Bolsonaro, the former candidate's younger brother. A private Gulfstream jet, operated by charter airline Baires Fly, was waiting at the airport. Flight data indicated the aircraft made a stop in Guayaquil, Ecuador, for refueling before continuing its flight to the United States. Bolsonaro reportedly traveled using an Italian passport, having acquired Italian citizenship in 2023.

US Entry and Trump's Involvement

The private jet landed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, uniformed officers used umbrellas to shield Bolsonaro and his family from media presence as they were escorted to a waiting vehicle. Reports indicate that former President Donald Trump personally approved the family's entry into the United States on Tuesday, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio subsequently facilitating visa issuance.

The family was admitted under humanitarian parole, granting them permission to stay in the U.S. for a period of one year, according to individuals familiar with the arrangements. Trump advisor Jason Miller played a role in securing the charter flight, collaborating with Eduardo Bolsonaro. This move is seen as the culmination of years of effort by the Bolsonaro family to foster connections with Trump and his inner circle.

Reactions and Future Plans

In a statement released from Miami, Bolsonaro declared himself the "leader of Brazil" and expressed gratitude to Trump for welcoming him to a "land of freedoms." He also commended President Milei for his "courage" and "sense of justice." Former President Trump commented on the situation, stating that he believed the Bolsonaros were "treated very unfairly," while also noting that he would not get involved, describing the election as "very strange."

Bolsonaro is reportedly considering establishing a political operation while in exile in the United States. The extent to which the current U.S. administration might intervene in Brazil's domestic political and legal matters remains unclear.
