Farrukhabad Health Facilities to Become Tobacco-Free

Health Institutions Targeted for Tobacco-Free Status

Special efforts will be made to make all government health institutions in Farrukhabad district tobacco-free. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Anand Upadhyay has issued directives to the relevant officials in this regard.

He emphasized that health institutions should be symbols of a healthy lifestyle, and therefore, the consumption or sale of any form of tobacco products within hospital premises will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Enforcing Anti-Tobacco Regulations

The CMO has instructed the District Tobacco Control Cell to ensure effective compliance with the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA)-2003. As part of this, designated warning boards, 'No Smoking' signs, and awareness materials related to tobacco prohibition will be prominently displayed at key locations within hospital premises.

Inspections will also be conducted periodically to take action against violators according to the rules. These measures aim to create a completely tobacco-free environment within these critical public health spaces.

Health Risks Associated with Tobacco Use

Dr. Anand Upadhyay stated that tobacco consumption is a major cause of cancer, heart disease, severe lung illnesses, and other incurable diseases. He highlighted the health department's significant responsibility not only to provide treatment but also to motivate people to quit tobacco.

Patients and their families visiting hospitals will be regularly educated about the ill effects of tobacco. If needed, they will also be provided with the benefits of tobacco cessation counseling services to support their quitting journey.

Prioritizing a Clean and Safe Environment

The CMO has directed all In-Charge Medical Officers to conduct regular inspections of their respective health institutions and ensure that no smoking or tobacco consumption occurs within the hospital premises. He clarified that maintaining a clean, safe, and tobacco-free environment in the district's health institutions is the highest priority for the health department.

The health department will continuously strive to prevent tobacco consumption in the district through public awareness, regular inspections, and effective enforcement, thereby protecting future generations from tobacco-related diseases.
