Prolonged high blood sugar levels negatively affect blood circulation, nerve function, collagen quality, and the body's healing capacity. This considerably increases the risk of various orthopedic problems in individuals with diabetes compared to the general population.

Weakened Bones and Increased Fracture Risk

Uncontrolled diabetes can weaken bone quality, making fractures more likely. Bones in the hip, spine, and feet become particularly vulnerable. In cases of bone fractures, the healing process can be slower in diabetic patients, and the risk of complications like non-union (improper bone healing) also increases.

Furthermore, a compromised immune system can elevate the risk of bone infections, such as osteomyelitis. Diabetic patients also face a higher likelihood of infections and other complications following orthopedic surgery, which can prolong recovery.

Diabetic patients undergoing orthopedic surgery require special precautions. High blood sugar levels increase the risk of wound infections, delayed wound healing, infections around implants, and postoperative stiffness.

These complications can significantly extend the rehabilitation and recovery period after surgery, potentially leading to long-term effects on a patient's functionality.

Control and Prevention Measures

Maintaining balanced blood sugar levels is paramount for effectively managing diabetes-related orthopedic problems. As advised by physicians, keeping the HbA1c level within the target range is essential.

Regular weight-bearing exercises, muscle-strengthening activities, and physiotherapy help maintain body strength and flexibility. Adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and protein in the diet is crucial for promoting bone and muscle health.

Diabetic patients should regularly inspect their feet and seek immediate medical attention for any signs of wounds or infections. Additionally, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can also be beneficial in reducing these complications.

Experts believe that diabetes is not just a metabolic disorder but can severely affect bones, joints, muscles, and tendons. These complications can be minimized through proper glycemic control, regular exercise, timely health check-ups, and appropriate orthopedic care. This allows patients to maintain better mobility, physical capacity, and quality of life for an extended period.
