Congress Maintains Strong Lead in Datia Bypoll

The Congress party is consistently extending its lead in the vote counting for the Datia assembly by-election. By the end of the eighth round, the Congress had secured a total lead of 6,583 votes over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The eighth round in Datia city alone saw Congress gain a significant advantage of 3,288 votes, further solidifying the margin.

These initial results are a crucial indicator for the Congress, which is hoping to strengthen its position this time around. Discussing the factors behind Congress's lead, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar told Dainik Bhaskar that a BJP leader, whose ticket was denied, has indirectly helped garner votes for the Congress. He expressed confidence that all these equations are contributing to Congress's substantial lead.

Singhar's statement hints at internal strife within the BJP, which could prove to be an additional factor in Congress's electoral advantage.

BJP's Confidence Contrasts with Electoral Trends

Despite the unfolding trends, senior BJP leader and former Home Minister Narottam Mishra reiterated his party's victory claims during the counting process. He stated, "BJP will win, I have been saying this from the beginning." Mishra attributed the victory to collective effort, emphasizing that it's not just his hard work but a combined effort within the BJP.

He also suggested that the efforts of the Chief Minister and the state president are yielding results. However, the electoral trends appear to contradict these claims, potentially causing a wave of concern within the BJP camp. The BJP leadership will likely conduct a thorough analysis of the reasons for this defeat, especially when an experienced leader faces such a setback.

By-election Context and Electoral History

This by-election was necessitated after the disqualification of Datia MLA Rajendra Bharti of the Congress following a two-year sentence in a cooperative rural development bank fraud case. The previous contest for this seat was notably intense.

In the 2023 assembly elections, Rajendra Bharti had defeated the then Home Minister Dr. Narottam Mishra by a margin of 7,742 votes. That result was considered a major setback for the BJP at the time, also impacting Narottam Mishra's political standing.

With Bharti's disqualification leading to the seat becoming vacant again, this by-election will not only reflect the current political power balance but also shed light on the possibility of a repeat of the previous election's outcome.
