Residents Rally Against Illegal Commercial Construction

Residents from several residential areas in Bhopal have pledged their support to the ongoing campaign against illegal commercial construction and activities on residential plots in Arera Colony. Representatives from Gautam Nagar, Rachna Nagar, Shahpura, Trilanga, Gulmohar Colony, and many other residential areas of the city participated in a meeting held in Arera Colony on Sunday.

The residents expressed concern that if residential colonies are not protected from illegal construction and commercial encroachment, the planned residential system of the entire Bhopal will face a serious crisis. During the meeting, serious questions were raised about the functioning of the Municipal Corporation.

Allegations Against Municipal Corporation

Resident organizations accused the Bhopal Municipal Corporation of inaction and apathy, leading to a continuous increase in rule violations in residential areas. Petitioner Purnendu Shukla stated that despite numerous complaints, public hearings, and even clear court directives, no effective action is being taken against illegal constructions. This has emboldened illegal constructors, who are violating rules with impunity.

Disregard for Court Orders Cited

Citing orders from the Supreme Court, residents pointed out that the Honourable Supreme Court has explicitly directed strict action and demolition of illegal constructions on residential land. They cited the example of Meerut, where malls and hotels operating in large residential complexes were demolished. In contrast, in Bhopal, the administration appears helpless and hesitant to act under pressure from influential individuals.

Residents argue that the Bhopal Municipal Corporation is issuing notices only for show, to present a response to the government in the upcoming hearing on August 4 before the Supreme Court, claiming action is underway. Neeraj Gulati of the Arera Commercial Complex Association revealed that given the Municipal Corporation's approach, they have fully prepared to file a contempt petition citing previous Supreme Court orders.

Pledge to Protect Citizens' Rights

Shubhra Srivastav, President of the Shahpura Residential Association, stated that if the concerned officials do not ensure compliance with court directives, it directly constitutes a case of contempt of court orders. Mayank Nagar, President of the Rachna Nagar Residents Association, confirmed that a contempt petition will be filed in the Honourable Supreme Court against the concerned officials for non-compliance with court orders.

The residents further emphasized that when the administration fails to fulfill its statutory obligations, judicial intervention becomes the last resort for protecting citizens' rights. The resident organizations clarified that their movement is not against any specific individual or institution but is aimed at protecting the existence of Bhopal's residential colonies, the rule of law, and the citizens' right to a safe and organized life. They announced that in the coming days, citizens from various residential areas of the city will form a joint forum to broaden this public campaign.

They stated that they will pursue their struggle through democratic and legal means if necessary. This unity reflects the growing dissatisfaction among Bhopal's citizens who are striving to protect their residential areas from commercial encroachment. Their demand is that the administration strictly adhere to the Supreme Court's orders and halt illegal constructions to preserve the city's planned residential system.
