Residents' Outrage Erupts Over Illegal Business Operations

Hundreds of residents in Bhopal's Gautam Nagar area participated in a massive protest march, expressing deep anger over ongoing illegal commercial activities in residential zones. The residents are accusing the municipal corporation of appeasing influential individuals and are prepared to expose this alleged collusion in court.

According to Gautam Nagar President Mohan Kharfate and Somkant Umalkar, numerous hotels, hostels, and 'chai-sutta bars' are operating illegally in their locality. These establishments attract suspicious individuals late into the night, forcing residents to endure a 'hellish existence'.

Health and Safety Concerns Highlighted

A local resident, Aditya, shared a harrowing account, stating that his family members have developed lung infections due to constant cigarette smoking outside their home. These unregulated activities pose a severe threat to the peace and safety of residential areas, which are meant for family living.

The rampant commercial encroachment is causing significant disruption, including noise pollution, traffic congestion, and security worries. The situation is exacerbated by establishments operating late into the night, disturbing the studies of children and the peace of the elderly.

Municipal Corporation's Actions Questioned

Residents and complainants have raised serious questions about the municipal corporation's response to illegal constructions. They allege that while the corporation claimed to have taken action, most illegal commercial establishments were merely temporarily shut down, resuming operations by evening.

Aparna Vashishth, President of the Prayas Sanstha, stated that despite Supreme Court directives, the municipal corporation failed to take expected action against businesses that were issued sealing notices. Instead, posters were put up on many shops stating that commercial activities were stopped as per municipal orders.

Resident Kamal Rathi objected to these posters, arguing that their presence itself indicates that commercial activities violating land-use norms were indeed taking place. This, he asserts, is a serious violation that distorts the fundamental nature of residential areas.

Allegations of Superficial Action

Complainants claim the municipal corporation's actions have been purely cosmetic. They allege that some traders temporarily closed their businesses, sent pictures of the posters to the corporation, and then reopened most establishments. This suggests the actions might be aimed at creating a record rather than genuinely stopping illegal activities.

This trend is seen as dangerous, weakening the rule of law and infringing upon civic rights. Residents feel helpless against these antisocial elements due to the municipal corporation's inaction.

Facts to be Presented in Supreme Court

All these facts will be presented before the Supreme Court during its next hearing on August 4 by petitioners Vivek Tripathi and Lavnish Bhati.

Complainant Vivek Tripathi stated that the municipal corporation's weak action appears to be a failed attempt to protect the illegal commercial establishments of influential operators, which is why stringent action is not being taken against these illegal buildings. This has eroded public trust in the district administration.

He warned that if this situation persists, it will not only violate the rights of Bhopal's citizens but also set a dangerous precedent, encouraging such illegal activities in other cities in the future. This issue transcends mere commercial encroachment; it is linked to citizens' constitutional right to live in a safe and peaceful environment.

Residents Warn Political Parties

Former IAS officer Kavindra Kiyawat, who participated in the march, called for unity against this chaos, emphasizing that such issues are above party politics and require collective effort.

Shubhra Goyal, President of the Shahpura Samiti, indicated they would expose the municipal corporation's negligence regarding illegal constructions in Shahpura. Women, children, youth, and elderly residents from various areas like Rachna Nagar, Shanti Niketan, Shahpura, Gulmohar, and Arera Colony participated, highlighting the problem's widespread nature.

Resident committees have issued a stern warning to political parties: 95% of Bhopal's voters are residents suffering from this problem. Any leader or party that opposes them or supports the operators of these illegal buildings will face their opposition in the next elections.

All new Bhopal resident organizations have collectively declared that if the municipal corporation fails to take impartial and concrete action against these illegal commercial activities, they will protest in every neighborhood and residential complex and present all facts in court. This collective action demonstrates the power of united citizens in resolving their issues.
