Major Action Against Hospitals for Ayushman Bharat Irregularities

In a significant crackdown on irregularities in the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, authorities in Madhya Pradesh have taken action against 83 private hospitals. This comprehensive action includes blacklisting 18 facilities, suspending 15, and imposing hefty fines on the remaining 50.

The severe measures were taken due to critical discrepancies found in treatments provided under the scheme. The objective is to prevent the misuse of the government health program and ensure patients receive quality care adhering to established standards. Many hospitals failed to improve their systems despite repeated warnings.

Hospitals Blacklisted and Suspended

As a result of these findings, 18 hospitals have been de-empanelled and placed on a blacklist, meaning they can no longer provide any treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Additionally, 15 hospitals have been suspended with immediate effect, temporarily barring them from participating in the scheme.

Grave Misuse of Scheme Revealed

Audits uncovered serious violations including:

• Admitting patients to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) without medical necessity.
• Improperly leveraging Ayushman packages.
• Violating the scheme's prescribed rules.

These irregularities led to a total fine of INR 3.13 crore (31,379,311) imposed on 50 hospitals, underscoring the administration's seriousness in tackling scheme misuse.

Bhopal Heavily Affected by Action

The state capital, Bhopal, has been particularly impacted by this drive. Actions have been taken against 25 hospitals in the city, including the blacklisting of 4, suspension of 8, and financial penalties for 13 others. These Bhopal hospitals collectively face penalties amounting to INR 2.11 crore (21,191,492), a substantial portion of the total fines.

Discrepancies in Bed Capacity Also Noted

Investigations also revealed significant discrepancies in the number of beds recorded versus the actual number available in some hospitals. Certain facilities were found to have up to 30 percent fewer beds than their registered capacity, a violation of scheme standards that is also being seriously considered.

According to officials, this extensive action followed a thorough review of services provided by hospitals under the Ayushman scheme and their submitted claims. The primary aim is to ensure that scheme benefits reach genuine beneficiaries and prevent the exploitation of public health services.
