Amit Shah's Fierce Attack on Drugs in Punjab, CM Mann Announces CBI Probe

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's Strong Stance Against Drugs in Punjab

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to Punjab, launched a sharp critique of the Aam Aadmi Party government concerning the state's severe drug problem and law and order situation. He emphasized that the drug trade in Punjab has escalated into a grave crisis, regrettably leading to violence and attacks against those who speak out against it.

Shah stressed that mere accusations are unproductive; the government must prioritize ensuring the safety of those raising their voices against drugs and delivering justice to affected families. As part of his one-day tour, the Union Home Minister met with families in Gurdaspur, Sangrur, and Mansa districts who lost loved ones in cases related to the drug trade or due to their opposition to it.

Through these deeply empathetic encounters, Amit Shah underscored the pervasive drug issue in the state as a significant political and administrative agenda item. This visit has brought renewed political focus to the fight against narcotics in Punjab.

Murder of Anti-Drug Activist and Decision for CBI Investigation

A pivotal and sensitive aspect of the Union Home Minister's visit was the recent murder of anti-drug activist Parwinder Singh Jhota in Mansa. Jhota was shot dead on October 13 at a medical store, reportedly for his vocal opposition to the illegal sale of banned narcotics.

Following his brutal killing, his family and supporters staged continuous protests demanding a fair investigation and justice. A key demand from the family was for the sensitive case to be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Understanding the gravity of the situation, a few hours before Amit Shah's arrival, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took a significant step by announcing that the Jhota murder case would be handed over to the CBI.

The Chief Minister stated in a release that this decision was made in acknowledgment of the family's concerns and demands. He also assured that the government would take all necessary steps to make the state drug-free. Immediately after this announcement, Amit Shah reached Mansa, met with Jhota's family, and assured them of all possible justice.

Concerns Over Law and Order and Social Crisis

Amit Shah expressed serious concern regarding the law and order situation in Punjab. He stated that when people are losing their lives for speaking out against drugs, it poses a grave threat to the state's security and good governance. He stressed the need for more effective and decisive action to curb drug trafficking and organized crime in the state.

During his visit, the Union Home Minister also met with the victim's family of Vikramjeet Singh in Gurdaspur and the family of Gulzar Singh in Sangrur. These meetings and the issues raised have further intensified the political debate surrounding Punjab's severe drug problem and the ensuing social crisis.

Anti-Drug Message at Dussehra Celebration

A strong anti-drug message was also conveyed during the Dussehra celebrations held in Ludhiana. The plan included burning a symbolic effigy of 'Chitta' (heroin) alongside the effigy of Ravana. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) presented this initiative as a campaign to protect Punjab's youth from drug addiction and to raise public awareness against drug trafficking.

This symbolic act reflects society's profound concern about the drug menace. The issue of drugs in Punjab has emerged as a critical political point ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The BJP is actively targeting the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, particularly on issues of drug abuse and deteriorating law and order.

Conversely, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's government is assuring strict action against drugs and a resolution to the problem. However, it is evident that a genuine and sustainable solution to this complex issue cannot be achieved through political rhetoric or assurances alone. It requires highly effective and decisive action against drug trafficking networks, comprehensive rehabilitation programs for drug addicts, justice for victim families, and fair, stringent law enforcement.

The Union Home Minister's visit has imparted a new political direction to the fight against drugs in Punjab. It remains to be seen how fair and effective the upcoming CBI investigation will be, what actions will be taken against the culprits, and what concrete steps the governments will implement to control the illegal drug trade in the state. The sincerity of the Union Home Minister's assurance of justice for victim families will depend entirely on these outcomes.
