Zohran Mamdani sworn in as New York mayor at midnight, blending faith, fashion and politics

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City’s 112th mayor just after midnight in an abandoned subway station near City Hall, marking the start of a new political era. Taking oath on the Quran, held by his wife Rama Duwaji, Mamdani exited to music by Sikh rapper Babbu Singh as confetti filled the air.

The ceremony stood out for its strong cultural and fashion statements. Mamdani wore a black velvet suit with a custom Eri silk herringbone tie by Delhi-based designer Kartik Kumra, while Duwaji turned heads in curated designer ensembles, including vintage Balenciaga and Renaissance Renaissance. Styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, the couple’s looks sparked both praise and criticism online, particularly over luxury accessories.

Addressing the debate, Duwaji later said her fashion choices were intentional, noting that wearing Palestinian designers was a way to convey political and cultural solidarity.
