World’s Longest Dinosaur Trackway Discovered in Oxfordshire: A 220-Metre ‘Prehistoric Superhighway’

In a groundbreaking find, researchers in the UK have uncovered one of the longest known dinosaur trackways on Earth — a 220-metre trail of footprints left by a massive sauropod nearly 166 million years ago.
The discovery, made at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, is being hailed as a “prehistoric superhighway” that could reshape our understanding of how these colossal creatures moved across ancient landscapes.


A Monumental Discovery Beneath Layers of Limestone

The remarkable sequence of footprints was unearthed by a joint team of palaeontologists and geologists from across the UK, including experts from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and the University of Birmingham.

The trackway came to light after a controlled explosion exposed layers of limestone that had entombed the prints for millions of years. Once revealed, researchers realised they were standing atop one of the most extensive dinosaur trackways ever documented in Europe.

Dr. Emma Nicholls, from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, described the discovery as “nothing short of extraordinary.”
“The footprints are insanely big — each one capturing a moment in the life of an enormous animal that walked this land long before humans existed,” she said.


Who Left the Footprints?

The team believes the trackway was created by a sauropod — one of the largest plant-eating dinosaurs to have ever roamed Earth. The animal may have been similar to Cetiosaurus, a long-necked, four-legged giant that reached up to 20 metres in length.

The sheer scale and spacing of the footprints suggest that this sauropod was moving across a shallow lagoon or muddy floodplain, leaving behind impressions that hardened into stone over millions of years.

Palaeontologist Dr. Kirsty Edgar of the University of Birmingham told the BBC that the find offers an unprecedented glimpse into the locomotion of these ancient giants.
“We’re uncovering something that people have never seen before. It’s incredibly rare to find trackways of this length and preservation — it’s like reading a diary written in stone,” she said.


Why It Matters

Trackways like these are more than just fossilised footprints — they are records of behaviour. Scientists say the “dinosaur superhighway” could provide insights into sauropod movement, herd dynamics, and even environmental conditions during the Middle Jurassic period.

The find also strengthens evidence that parts of Oxfordshire and the surrounding region were once coastal lowlands, teeming with prehistoric life.

“This discovery adds another piece to the puzzle of how dinosaurs interacted with their environments,” said Dr. Nicholls. “Each footprint tells a story of motion, weight, and direction — it’s the closest thing we have to watching a dinosaur walk.”


Preserving a Prehistoric Legacy

Conservation teams are now working to map, photograph, and digitally reconstruct the entire 220-metre trackway using advanced 3D imaging techniques. The goal is to ensure that the prints can be studied and displayed without damaging the original site.

Some sections of the trackway may eventually be transferred to museums for public viewing, while others will remain protected within the quarry.
