West Central Railway Achieves Key Milestones in July 2026

West Central Railway, Jabalpur, has achieved several significant accomplishments in July 2026 through its mechanical departments, focusing on safe rail operations, increased production capacity, and the promotion of indigenous innovations. Under the guidance of the General Manager and Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, the department not only surpassed its wagon maintenance targets but also further solidified operational safety by developing useful indigenous tools in its workshops.

Wagon Repair Factory, Kota Exceeds Periodic Overhauling Target

The Wagon Repair Factory, Kota, successfully overhauled 590 wagons against a target of 575 wagons for Periodic Overhauling (POH) in July 2026. This represents an achievement of 2.60 percent above the set target. The overhauling process involves a thorough inspection and necessary maintenance of wagon wheels, brake gear, underframe, and other critical components, aiming to prevent potential technical failures and improve the overall safety and reliability of rail operations.

Significant Progress in Wagon and Coach Maintenance

During the financial year 2026-27, up to July, West Central Railway completed the Periodic Overhauling (POH) of a total of 2,349 wagons, 372 passenger coaches, and 15 MEMU/EMU vehicle units. At the railway factories in Bhopal and Kota, under the effective leadership of the Chief Workshop Managers, coach and wagon maintenance work continues with high-quality standards, ensuring these critical operational assets remain safe and reliable.

Promotion of Indigenous Innovations in Workshops

Prioritizing passenger safety, technicians at the Kota Coaching Depot have developed two beneficial indigenous tools that play a crucial role in enhancing the quality and safety of coaching stock. The first is the 'Water Leakage Test Apparatus', a portable device that simulates artificial heavy rainfall conditions on a standing coach. This effectively detects potential water leakage from coach roof joints, windows, and doors before the coach is put into service, preventing passenger inconvenience.

The second significant innovation is the 'Hand Brake Mechanical Indicator'. This device is installed in the Train Manager's cabin and clearly displays the status of the hand brake as 'ON/APPLIED' or 'OFF/RELEASED'. This allows for immediate confirmation of the hand brake's position before the train departs, preventing potentially dangerous situations, especially if a train were to start with the hand brake unintentionally engaged.

Ten-Day Safety Campaign: Comprehensive Inspections and Rectification

As per the directives of the Railway Board, West Central Railway conducted a ten-day intensive safety campaign from July 7, 2026. This campaign involved a thorough inspection of the air-conditioned (AC) coaching stock of moving trains. The mechanical department collaborated with the electrical, commercial, operating, and safety departments. This joint effort resulted in a total of 295 inspections across all three divisions, comprising 89 officer-level and 206 supervisor-level inspections. The 156 defects identified during these inspections were ensured to be rectified in a timely manner, mitigating potential safety risks.

Vigilance of Staff Averts Potential Accidents

During July, the vigilance and promptness of West Central Railway's dedicated staff helped in the timely detection of four critical wagon-related defects that could have led to major accidents. These defects included two instances of jammed brake blocks, one hot axle (where wheels overheat), and a missing component of a wagon trolley. The timely detection of these serious issues led to the halting of affected trains and immediate necessary repairs. The staff's diligence and swift action were commended and they were also honored for their services.
