In a significant effort to prolong the life of its venerable interstellar explorer, NASA has implemented an "interstellar tweak" on the Voyager 2 spacecraft, affectionately nicknamed the "Big Bang." This strategic adjustment aims to keep the probe's 50-year-old science instruments functional for an extended period, ensuring continued data collection from the edge of our solar system and beyond.

Launched in 1977 alongside its twin, Voyager 1, the spacecraft rely on radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for power. These units generate heat from the decay of plutonium, which is then converted into electricity. However, the radioactive fuel supply naturally diminishes, with each spacecraft losing approximately four watts of power annually.

Conserving Power in Deep Space

To combat this dwindling power supply, engineers recently executed a series of measures to reduce Voyager 2's energy demands. This involved disabling a few non-science related devices and switching to "lower-power alternatives." These alternative systems are still effective enough to maintain the spacecraft's essential warmth, a crucial function given its extreme distance from the sun.

NASA officials stated in a recent announcement that the spacecraft's "power margins have grown razor thin, requiring the team to conserve energy by shutting off non-essential devices and systems." The mission is managed by the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Impact on Scientific Instruments

The ongoing decline in power has had a measurable impact on the scientific capabilities of both Voyager probes. Since 2024 alone, each spacecraft has had to deactivate two of its science instruments. While some of these shutdowns were due to the completion of their historic planetary flybys decades ago, others were necessary purely due to power constraints.

Each Voyager spacecraft was initially equipped with 10 science instruments. Currently, Voyager 2 is operating with only three instruments. Earlier projections suggested that Voyager 2 might have to shut down another instrument later this year. However, the recent power-saving measures will enable all three of its remaining instruments to operate for "at least another year," according to NASA.
