Tamil superstar Chiyaan Vikram has once again highlighted his dedication to transformative roles, with details emerging about his unusually strict diet for the 1999 film Sethu. The actor revealed that to portray a frail, emaciated character, his daily intake was limited to a single dry chapati, one beetroot juice, and a single egg white, spaced throughout the day.

During an interview on The Ranveer Show in 2024, Vikram elaborated on the extreme measures he took, stating, “That’s all I ate. One dry chapati, one beetroot juice and one egg white through the day. I don’t have anything else. Just that. I space it throughout the day.” He also mentioned walking 30 kilometres to and from the film location to aid in his weight loss.

Expert Caution on Extreme Diets

Consultant dietitian and fitness expert Garima Goyal emphasized that Vikram's diet for Sethu was a specific requirement for a role and should not be considered a general dietary recommendation. “Actors sometimes follow highly structured eating patterns for specific physical transformations, and their requirements can differ considerably depending on the role, training volume, body composition and timeframe,” Goyal explained.

Goyal further noted that the frequency of meals is a personal matter, influenced by individual factors such as hunger, schedule, training, digestion, and overall nutritional needs. The crucial aspect, she stated, is ensuring that the diet, regardless of meal frequency, provides adequate energy, protein, fibre, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. “Eating smaller amounts at multiple points during the day is not inherently better than eating three meals,” she added.

Nutritional Limitations of the 'Sethu' Diet

The expert also cautioned against focusing solely on the limited food items mentioned in celebrity diets. “A diet consisting predominantly of chapati, beetroot juice and egg whites would not, by itself, provide the full range of nutrients required for long-term health,” Goyal told indianexpress.com. She pointed out that while the combination offered carbohydrates from the chapati and lean protein from egg whites, with added components from the beetroot juice, a balanced eating pattern would typically incorporate a wider variety of foods.

A balanced diet, according to Goyal, would normally include a broader spectrum of vegetables, fruits, pulses or other protein sources, healthy fats, and sufficient micronutrients to support overall health and well-being. The limited components in Vikram's diet for Sethu likely fell short of these comprehensive nutritional requirements for sustained health.

The Importance of Consistent Movement

However, Vikram's commitment to extensive walking for the role highlights a significant principle of physical activity. Goyal remarked that movement does not always need to be structured as a formal workout. “Walking to and from places, taking stairs and reducing prolonged sitting can all contribute to daily physical activity,” she said, underscoring the value of incorporating incidental movement into daily routines.

Vikram is renowned for his dramatic physical transformations for various films, including Thangalaan (2024), Iru Mugan (2016), and Pithamagan (2003), showcasing his commitment to method acting and embodying his characters to the fullest.
