Actress Kangana Ranaut recently captivated onlookers in a vibrant plum Eri silk ensemble, which she revealed to be her "first Meghalaya sari". The striking garment was a gift from the brand Taara Vedaa.

The premium, handcrafted sari is made from 100% pure Eri silk. According to Taara Vedaa, the fabric underwent a natural dyeing process, with the unique colour derived from pomegranate and iron dust. The intricate weaving of the sari reportedly took approximately 2.5 months to complete.

Understanding Eri Silk: Ahimsa Silk

Eri Silk, also known as 'Ahimsa' (Peace) Silk, is a sustainable and durable textile produced primarily in Northeast India. This specialized silk originates from the Philosamia ricini moth.

A key characteristic of Eri Silk production is its ethical approach. Unlike other silk varieties, the moths are allowed to emerge from their cocoons before harvest, making the process entirely cruelty-free. This distinguishes it as a significant sustainable textile choice.

Unique Properties of Eri Silk

Eri Silk is recognized for its distinctive matte, cotton-like texture. This makes it comfortable for wear in various climates, offering warmth in winter and coolness in summer.

The fabric is also exceptionally breathable, contributing to its appeal as a versatile and comfortable textile. The use of natural dyes, such as pomegranate and iron dust, further enhances its eco-friendly credentials.
