US Launches Retaliatory Airstrikes in Syria After Deadly ISIS Attack

The United States carried out a series of targeted airstrikes against ISIS positions in central Syria following a deadly attack that killed two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter last weekend. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the strikes as a measured response. “This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance,” Hegseth said in a statement and on social media. “Today, we hunted and we killed our enemies. Lots of them. And we will continue.”

Two anonymous officials told The Associated Press that dozens of ISIS targets were struck across central Syria. The operation involved F-15 Eagle fighter jets, A-10 Thunderbolt ground-attack aircraft, and AH-64 Apache helicopters. Additional strikes may follow, though the Pentagon declined to provide further operational details, referring media inquiries to Hegseth’s statement.

The strikes come in direct response to an attack in the Syrian desert near Palmyra, which targeted a convoy of American and Syrian forces. The assault killed Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa, both members of the Iowa National Guard, and Ayad Mansoor Sakat, a civilian interpreter from Macomb, Michigan. Three other US soldiers were wounded.

Syrian authorities identified the attacker as a member of Syria’s security forces suspected of sympathising with ISIS.

Political Reactions

Following the attack, President Donald Trump had pledged “very serious retaliation.” White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated, “President Trump told the world that the United States would retaliate for the killing of our heroes by ISIS in Syria, and he is delivering on that promise.”

The operation underscores ongoing US efforts to target ISIS remnants in Syria, even as American and allied forces coordinate with Syrian government units in some areas of the country.
