NASA Boosts Mars Rover Mission

NASA has given the green light to the Rosalind Franklin Support and Augmentation (ROSA) project, signifying a major milestone for the Rosalind Franklin Mars rover mission. This move strengthens the partnership between NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) on this ambitious project.

The mission, spearheaded by ESA, aims to search for life beyond our planet. The rover's unique drilling capability sets it apart from previous Mars missions. It will drill up to two meters deep.

SpaceX to Launch in 2028

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket will carry the Rosalind Franklin rover to Mars. The launch is currently targeted for late 2028. This will take place from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center.

The contract was awarded under the agency’s Launch Services II framework. The delays were earlier caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

NASA's Key Contributions

Under the ROSA project, NASA will provide crucial elements for mission success. These include launch services and braking engines.

NASA will also contribute radioisotope heater units and advanced electronics. A sophisticated mass spectrometer will also be provided for the Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer instrument.

Searching for Life on Mars

The rover will analyze soil samples from its landing site, Oxia Planum. This region is believed to have once contained water and clay-rich deposits.
