New Zealand Boosts India Trade Ahead of PM Modi's Visit

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has heralded a significant proposed trade agreement with India, stating it will offer substantial benefits to Kiwi businesses. The announcement comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to New Zealand.

Mr. Luxon revealed that 57 per cent of New Zealand's exports to India will be tariff-free from the very first day the agreement is enacted. He expressed optimism about the deal's potential impact.

"New Zealand businesses are set to boom with our India Trade Deal. 57 per cent of everything we export to India will be tariff free from day one."

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled for a two-day state visit to New Zealand from July 10 to 11. This visit, at the invitation of PM Luxon, marks the first state visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in approximately four decades, signalling a warming of diplomatic and economic relations.

During his stay in Auckland, PM Modi will engage in bilateral talks with PM Luxon. Discussions are expected to cover the full spectrum of bilateral ties, with a strong focus on key sectors such as trade, commerce, and defence.

New Zealand is the final leg of Prime Minister Modi's three-nation tour, following visits to Indonesia and Australia. This tour underscores India's commitment to enhancing its engagement with key partners within the Indo-Pacific region.

The agenda includes expanding cooperation in critical areas like trade, investment, defence, technology, and critical minerals. The visits are also intended to advance India's 'Act East' policy and promote a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
