NC MP's Statement on PoK Ignites Political Firestorm, BJP Retaliates Strongly
A statement by an NC MP on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has sparked a major political row, with the BJP calling for a strong response.

Political Row Erupts Over NC MP's PoK Remark
A statement by National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament (MP) Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan regarding Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has ignited a fresh controversy in the country's politics. On the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, MP Ramzan stated, "We don't care about PoK. It is a separate country, part of another nation. The Pakistani government will look after its affairs." He further clarified that he would not comment on the problems of the people of PoK as they had not sent him to the Indian Parliament.
The MP's remarks were immediately met with sharp reactions from political circles. The Indian government and Parliament have consistently maintained that PoK is an integral part of Jammu and Kashmir. Therefore, the NC MP's statement is being viewed as contrary to national policy and parliamentary resolutions.
BJP's Sharp Retaliation, Emphasizes National Interests
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly retaliated against the National Conference MP's statement. Senior BJP leader Ravinder Raina described the statement as an attack on India's sovereignty, asserting that PoK is an indivisible part of India and that India does not need anyone's permission to reclaim it.
Raina accused some leaders of the National Conference of promoting Pakistan's propaganda with such statements, which are not in line with the country's national interests. He emphasized that the Indian Parliament has unanimously resolved that the entire Jammu and Kashmir, including PoK, is an integral part of India.
Farooq Abdullah's Concerns on Federal Structure, Demand for Statehood Restoration
Meanwhile, National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has expressed concerns over the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the state. He stated that stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its statehood and converting it into a Union Territory was completely contrary to the spirit of the federal structure.
Abdullah apprehended that if such a trend continues, other states might face similar actions in the future. He reiterated his long-standing demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Ongoing Protests in PoK and India's Stance
On the other hand, internal protests are ongoing in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The people there are expressing widespread discontent over inflation, Pakistan's administrative policies, and elections. The protests, led by the United Awami Action Committee (JAAC), have also seen serious allegations of alleged actions by security forces, internet service bans, and civilian casualties.
The Indian government recently dismissed the local elections conducted by Pakistan in PoK as a "complete sham." Responding to this, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that this electoral process was unable to hide the actual situation in the region, where the public is continuously protesting and the Pakistani government is carrying out repressive actions. Jaiswal also highlighted that Pakistan is violating the rights of the people in the areas under its illegal occupation.
His statement reflects India's consistent position that PoK is an integral part of India and any action taken by Pakistan there is illegal.
Mehbooba Mufti's Concerns Too, Peace and Self-Determination Aspirations
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti has also expressed concern over the situation in PoK. She stated that the people living across the Line of Control also have equal aspirations for peace, dignity, and deciding their own future.
Mufti also questioned the weakening of representative institutions, stating that such steps could exacerbate the problems there. Her statement highlights the need to understand the sentiments of the residents of PoK and to be sensitive to human rights in the region.
Conclusion: PoK Issue Back in National Spotlight
Following the NC MP's statement and the BJP's swift reaction, the issue of PoK has once again taken center stage in national politics. This development is drawing attention not only in India's internal political discourse but also internationally. This controversy underscores the importance of national consensus in India regarding Jammu and Kashmir and its occupied territories.
Currently, there has been no official clarification from the National Conference leadership regarding MP Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan's statement, leading to ongoing political speculation and further fueling the controversy. Meanwhile, the situation in PoK remains complex, with continued political unrest and protests reflecting the region's persistent instability.
