Focus on Sanitation Workers' Welfare and Rights

Dr. Sushma Gorial, a member of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (Sanitation Workers), chaired a significant meeting in Bareilly. She issued directives to officials from relevant departments to work with sensitivity towards the welfare and effective protection of sanitation workers' rights.

High-Level Meeting Addresses Key Issues

The meeting, held at the Circuit House on September 18, was attended by senior officials including the Divisional Commissioner, District Magistrate, and Senior Superintendent of Police. The primary agenda was to improve the living standards of sanitation workers and ensure their seamless access to government schemes.

Representatives from the Municipal Corporation Commissioner's office, District Social Welfare Officer, Chief Medical Officer, and the Labour Department also participated. The discussions extensively covered ground-level challenges related to sanitation services and the lack of coordination between departments.

Emphasis on Departmental Coordination and Ground Realities

Dr. Sushma Gorial underscored the administration's need to be highly sensitive to the interests of sanitation workers, who are considered the backbone of the sanitation system. She instructed all concerned departments to collaborate effectively to deliver welfare schemes to the last mile.

It was also decided in the meeting that transparent solutions to problems would be sought through the participation of representatives from sanitation worker organizations, contractors, and media personnel.

Accountability for Absent Officials

The Commission member stressed the priority of improving working conditions and strictly adhering to safety standards. During this session, a firm stance was taken against officials who were absent from the meeting, with instructions issued to seek explanations from them.

The administration has been mandated to take swift action on matters concerning sanitation workers in the future and to prioritize the resolution of their grievances. This dialogue is being considered a significant step towards the better implementation of government schemes for sanitation workers.
