NASA has halted a major test of its Artemis 2 rocket after persistent fuel leaks forced engineers to cut short a full countdown simulation at the launch site. The test, known as a wet dress rehearsal, was designed to verify fueling procedures before sending astronauts on a historic lunar mission.


Hydrogen leak detected during critical fueling rehearsal

The rehearsal began on January 31 and continued into early February, simulating the process of loading more than 700,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the rocket. Officials initially reported smooth operations, but engineers later identified hydrogen leaks at the tail service mast umbilical quick disconnect, prompting extended troubleshooting.

NASA confirmed that the issue led to an early end to the test, pushing the mission schedule back by at least a month while teams investigate the cause.


Recurring issue echoes challenges from Artemis 1

The latest leak is not the first of its kind. Similar hydrogen problems affected Artemis 1 during earlier testing phases, forcing multiple rollbacks to the Vehicle Assembly Building before the uncrewed mission successfully launched in November 2022.

Spaceflight analysts say repeated technical hurdles highlight the complexity of operating the Space Launch System, one of the most powerful rockets ever built.


Why Artemis 2 is a crucial milestone for lunar exploration

Unlike Artemis 1, the upcoming mission will carry astronauts for a 10 day journey around the far side of the Moon. The planned crew includes Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

The flight aims to validate the Orion spacecraft’s life support and deep space systems, paving the way for Artemis 3, which is expected to attempt a human lunar landing in the coming years.
