NASA has officially begun a crucial two-day practice countdown, marking the final stretch before its first crewed moonshot in more than half a century. The rehearsal, underway at Kennedy Space Center, will determine when the 322-foot Space Launch System (SLS) rocket can carry four astronauts on a 10-day lunar flyby mission.

The crew, led by Commander Reid Wiseman, is currently in quarantine at the Johnson Space Center to avoid exposure to germs. They will monitor the full simulation remotely before flying to Florida once the vehicle is cleared for launch.

A critical fueling test before liftoff

If Monday’s fueling test proceeds without issues, NASA could attempt a launch within the next week, with February 8 being the earliest possible liftoff date after a cold wave forced a delay.

For the demonstration, engineers will load the SLS with more than 700,000 gallons of super-chilled liquid propellants, stopping just 30 seconds before engine ignition.

This near-complete simulation ensures the rocket, ground systems and teams are fully prepared.

SLS and Orion: The most powerful configuration ever flown

The massive Space Launch System, standing 98 meters tall, rolled out to the launch pad two weeks earlier. It will send the astronauts inside the Orion spacecraft on a high-speed loop around the moon before returning to a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Unlike Apollo missions, this flight will not include a lunar landing. Instead, it is designed to validate:

deep-space navigation

life-support systems

high-speed re-entry capability

long-duration astronaut endurance

The mission will last nearly 10 days, setting the stage for future landings.

A historic return after half a century

NASA last sent astronauts toward the moon during the Apollo program (1968–1972).

A total of 24 astronauts made the journey, and 12 walked on the lunar surface.

This upcoming mission marks the first crewed lunar venture in more than 50 years, and a major milestone toward establishing a long-term human presence on and around the moon.

The current crew includes astronauts from both the United States and Canada, making it a global effort toward deeper space exploration.
