Rail Services Severely Disrupted

Torrential rainfall across Maharashtra has led to significant disruptions in rail services connecting Mumbai and Pune. Multiple landslides occurred near Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill on the Karjat-Lonavala section, depositing large amounts of debris onto the tracks.

As a precautionary measure, train operations have been suspended. Restoration teams are currently working to clear the affected stretch of the tracks. The continuous rainfall is reportedly slowing down the progress of this essential work.

More than 16 trains have been cancelled or diverted. Notable services affected include the CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, and Deccan Express. Railway authorities advise passengers to check the latest schedules before travel.

Road Connectivity Crippled

Road traffic between Mumbai and Pune has also been severely impacted. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway and parts of the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway have been temporarily closed.

These closures are due to unsafe travel conditions caused by landslides and waterlogging. Thousands of commuters have been left stranded, and the movement of both goods and passenger vehicles is significantly disrupted.

Alerts and Response Measures

Disaster response teams, police, and highway authorities are actively monitoring vulnerable locations. They are also providing assistance to stranded travellers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Pune, and surrounding areas.

The IMD warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. Authorities are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel and to remain alert due to the persistent risk of further landslides and flooding.
