JWST Reveals Never-Before-Seen Bubble Structures in the Red Spider Nebula

NASA has released a striking new image of NGC 6537, widely known as the Red Spider Nebula, capturing details that astronomers have been unable to observe until now. The image, taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), shows the nebula’s enormous lobes in their entirety — illuminated in blue — offering the most complete view yet of this dramatic cosmic structure.


Giant Hydrogen-Lit Lobes Span Three Light-Years

NASA explains that the lobes are sharply outlined by glowing molecular hydrogen (H₂), formed when two hydrogen atoms bond together. Over several thousand years, intense gas outflows from the nebula’s core have inflated these lobes, creating vast, closed bubble-like shapes that each extend around three light-years across.

These immense lobes are the result of a dying star shedding its outer layers, a common phase in the late-life evolution of Sun-like stars. As material streams outward, it forms intricate shapes that are then illuminated by ultraviolet radiation.


A “Cosmic Creepy-Crawly,” Says ESA

The European Space Agency (ESA) has nicknamed the nebula a “cosmic creepy-crawly,” noting that the elongated lobes in the JWST image resemble the spindly legs of a giant space spider. The dramatic appearance is accentuated by the nebula’s dark central region, where strong stellar winds carve channels through surrounding gas and dust.

The Red Spider Nebula is located in the constellation Sagittarius, roughly 3,000 light-years from Earth, and has long fascinated astronomers due to the extreme winds and high temperatures near its core.


Why This Image Matters

The new JWST data provides astronomers with a clearer understanding of the nebula’s complex structure and offers rare insight into how dying stars sculpt their surroundings. Scientists hope the image will help refine models of stellar evolution and the chemical processes that enrich the galaxy with heavier elements.
