Japan Launches H3 Rocket with New HTV-X Cargo Ship Bound for ISS

Japan successfully launched its H3 rocket, carrying the new HTV-X1 cargo spacecraft, on a mission to resupply the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant milestone for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The launch took place from the Tanegashima Space Center on southern Tanegashima island. JAXA confirmed that the spacecraft was separated from the rocket and placed into its planned orbit, setting the stage for a scheduled rendezvous with the ISS in the coming days. Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, aboard the ISS, is slated to capture the cargo ship using the station’s robotic arm early Thursday.


A New Era in Japanese Space Cargo

The HTV-X1, successor to the H-II Transfer Vehicle (Kounotori), enhances Japan’s space logistics capabilities. Between 2009 and 2020, Kounotori completed nine successful missions to the ISS. The new freighter can carry larger payloads and provide in-flight power to sensitive experiments, such as biological samples requiring low-temperature storage.

Designed for extended operations, the HTV-X can remain docked to the ISS for up to six months, delivering supplies, retrieving waste, and then conducting additional technical missions for up to three months after leaving the station.

“The HTV-X significantly strengthens our ability to support the ISS and conduct experiments in orbit,” said a JAXA spokesperson. “Its enhanced payload capacity and versatility will enable more complex scientific missions.”


H3: Japan’s Next-Generation Rocket

The H3 rocket replaces the long-serving H-2A, which completed its final flight in June. JAXA developed the H3 to be more cost-competitive and flexible, with the aim of boosting Japan’s commercial space transport capabilities. After a troubled debut in 2023, when the rocket had to be destroyed mid-flight due to a malfunction, the H3 has now achieved six consecutive successful launches, reaffirming its reliability.

For Japan, a stable and competitive space launch capability is considered vital not only for scientific exploration but also for national security and commercial competitiveness in the increasingly crowded global space sector.
