Supreme Penance Observed with Devotion
Narmadapuram | September 22, 2026 The Digambar Jain community in Narmadapuram observed the seventh day of the Paryushan Mahaparva with deep devotion and reverence, celebrating the religion of supreme penance. Temples saw large crowds of devotees from early morning, engaging in Abhishek, Shanti Dhara, and Swadhyay, creating a devotional atmosphere.
The True Meaning of Penance: Self-Mastery
Vidushi Suman Didi, visiting from the Indore Ashram, addressed the gathering, explaining that penance is not merely enduring physical hardship but a profound practice of conquering one's senses and mind. She clarified that practices like fasting and abstaining from certain tastes are only fruitful when devoid of attachment and aversion in the mind.
Control over desires is true penance. True penance involves controlling one's desires, leading to inner peace and spiritual progress.
Emphasis on Self-Control and Inner Peace
Vidushi Suman Didi stressed the importance of introspection and controlling desires. She suggested that this festival should extend beyond religious rituals, serving as an opportunity to embrace self-control and restraint in daily life. Achieving inner peace and spiritual advancement comes from reigning in one's desires.

Santosh Jain, the community president, stated that supreme penance inspires a disciplined life. He explained that through austerity, individuals strive to conquer inner vices such as anger, pride, deceit, and greed. He urged all community members to make introspection an integral part of their daily lives.
Evening Devotions and Cultural Presentations
The evening featured a Mangal Aarti and devotional discourses at the Shri 1008 Parshwanath Digambar Jinālay. This was followed by cultural competitions that entertained and captivated the devotees. Hundreds of followers, including families of Munnalal Jain, Praveen Jain, N.C. Jain, Dr. Pradeep Jain, Arun Jain, Vikas Jain, and Ratanlal Jain, participated in the event.
