Municipal Action Against Female Vendor Sparks Outcry
A controversy has erupted in Itarsi's market area following the demolition of a female street vendor's shop by the Nagar Palika (Municipal Council). Mrs. Leela Bai, who has been supporting her family for approximately 16 years by selling manihari items like bindis and bangles near the pond, claims her shop was removed using a JCB machine.
The woman asserts she possesses official documents, including tehbazari/registration issued by the Nagar Palika for her business. She describes the action as arbitrary, stating she received neither a prior written notice nor an opportunity to be heard. Furthermore, Mrs. Leela Bai reported that her shop and its contents were damaged during the demolition, resulting in significant financial loss.
She also pointed out that other shops operating nearby were not subjected to any action, highlighting a potential disparity. The vendor is demanding a fair investigation and adherence to legal procedures in this matter.
Call for Impartial Investigation and Legal Process
Advocate and social activist Siddharth Mahesh Arya has expressed concern over the Nagar Palika's action. He emphasized that any such action must be strictly in accordance with the law and prescribed procedures.
Mr. Arya stressed the urgent need for an impartial investigation into the facts of this case to clarify the actual situation and ensure justice for any party that may have been wronged. He announced plans to submit an application through a public hearing to the District Collector and Sub-Divisional Officer (Revenue).
This application will request an impartial inquiry, a thorough review of relevant records, and necessary legal action. Mr. Arya underscored that all administrative actions must be lawful, transparent, and applied equally, which is fundamental to a democratic system. He stated that if any irregularities are found during the investigation, the affected individual should be provided relief as per the law.
