Industrial Growth in Bhopal Region Receives New Direction

Bhopal and its surrounding districts – Raisen, Sehore, Rajgarh, and Narmadapuram – are charting a new course for industrial development. The strategy emphasizes moving beyond urban sprawl to develop new clusters and sector-based industrial hubs.

Under this ambitious plan, the development of over 51 new industrial areas is underway, in addition to the 88 already established industrial parks. These new zones will encompass diverse sectors including plastics, garments, furniture, logistics, power, and renewable energy.

Urban Land Integrated into Industrial Planning

A significant aspect of this new industrial expansion strategy is the incorporation of vacant land within urban areas into industrial planning. This approach aims to optimize the utilization of existing industrial zones and create new employment opportunities closer to the city.

Previously, industries primarily sought land on the outskirts. This shift now includes urban pockets, ensuring better use of existing infrastructure and promoting localized job growth.

Redevelopment and Modernization of Old Industrial Areas

According to Chandramouli Shukla, Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation Limited (MPIDC), the state is, for the first time, focusing on the redevelopment of old industrial areas with the same intensity as the development of new ones.

The primary objective is to maximize the use of existing industrial land and infrastructure while providing modern facilities for new-generation industries. Vacant land available around Satgadi and Minal in Bhopal is also being assessed under this strategy.

Detailed plans are being formulated to develop new industrial areas here, considering the city's current and future needs, the nature of industries, and their employment potential.

Expansion of Industrial Activities in Acharpura, Bagroda, Tamot, and Badia Khedi

Alongside existing industrial areas near Bhopal, new sector-wise clusters are being developed. Industrial activities are being significantly expanded in areas like Acharpura, Bagroda, Tamot, and Badia Khedi.

There is a special emphasis on developing land, roads, power, logistics, and other essential infrastructure in these regions according to the specific requirements of various industries. This initiative is expected to boost not only the number of industries but also local employment, supply chains, transportation, warehousing, and small businesses.

Three Major New Industrial Hubs: Berasia, Satgadi, and Badwai

Three major new industrial hubs are being developed in the Bhopal region, designed to accommodate various sectors and create approximately 11,000 new jobs.

Berasia: Agro-Based Industries and Food Processing Hub

A hub for agro-processing, light engineering, and food packaging units is planned on 33.61 hectares in Berasia, a rural area of Bhopal. Given the region's abundant agricultural production, this strategy specifically targets boosting food processing and packaging industries.

The target is to allocate plots and commence construction by the end of 2026. This hub is estimated to generate about 1,500 to 2,000 jobs, providing farmers with better local processing and marketing facilities and promoting value addition to agricultural produce.

Satgadi: Light Industry and MSME Cluster

A cluster for light industry, auto ancillary, assembling units, warehousing, and MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) is being developed on 69.91 hectares in Satgadi, near Bhopal city limits. This area is emerging as a crucial center for small and medium-sized industries.

The plan aims to have this hub ready by mid-2026-27. The Satgadi hub is expected to create approximately 3,000 to 4,000 jobs, playing a vital role in the expansion of the MSME sector around Bhopal.

Badwai: New Hub for IT-Electronics

Industrial development in the Badwai area, near Raja Bhoj Airport, is taking a specific direction with plans for 'plug and play' facilities for electronics assembly, data centers, IT-ITeS (Information Technology-enabled Services), and tech startups. The proximity to the airport offers excellent connectivity for IT and tech companies.

Facilities are being prepared for companies to commence operations immediately without significant initial construction. Operations are expected to begin by 2026-27, with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 jobs to be generated from this hub.

A New Model of Coordination Between City and Industries

This industrial expansion strategy for Bhopal is not merely about establishing industries on new land. It encompasses a broader vision integrating the redevelopment of old industrial areas, efficient use of available urban land, creation of sector-based clusters, and job generation.

The development of agro-based industries in Berasia, MSMEs and light industries in Satgadi, and an IT-electronics hub in Badwai is expected to bring unprecedented diversity to the industrial economy of the Bhopal region. Furthermore, expansion in areas like Acharpura, Bagroda, Tamot, and Badia Khedi will build a robust, multi-centric industrial network around the capital.

If the proposed projects materialize as scheduled in the coming years, this belt around Bhopal is poised to transcend the boundaries of traditional industrial areas and become a major industrial corridor encompassing diverse sectors such as agro-food, MSME, auto ancillary, logistics, IT, and renewable energy.
