Indian Foreign Secretary Meets Sri Lankan Leadership, Discusses Bilateral Relations

High-Level Discussions in Colombo

India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Colombo for a one-day official visit, engaging in in-depth discussions with Sri Lanka's top leadership on significant bilateral relations and the progress of joint projects. The primary objective of this visit was to further strengthen the centuries-old ties of friendship between India and Sri Lanka and to review various development initiatives.

During his busy schedule, Foreign Secretary Misri held high-level meetings with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath, and Foreign Secretary Aruni Ranaraja. These meetings placed special emphasis on accelerating ongoing development projects in key sectors such as connectivity, digital governance, energy, and health between the two countries.

According to the Indian High Commission, this visit is an important part of the ongoing high-level dialogue between the two nations, aligning with India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and 'Vision SAGAR'.

Bilateral Cooperation and Economic Partnership

The Indian High Commission in Colombo, sharing information on 'X', stated that Foreign Secretary Misri's meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake focused on reviewing issues of mutual interest and major bilateral projects. These projects also include development initiatives being undertaken in Sri Lanka with India's assistance.

Following the meeting, both sides exchanged agreements related to a 'Line of Credit' (LOC) of USD 350 million. This amount is part of the USD 450 million reconstruction package announced by India following the recent Cyclone 'Ditwah'. The objective of this LOC is to assist in the necessary reconstruction, infrastructure development, and procurement needs post-cyclone.

Strategic Partnership and Future Outlook

In his meeting with Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath, Foreign Secretary Misri reviewed the current status of cooperation in key priority areas. He also discussed regional and global issues with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Foreign Secretary Aruni Ranaraja, and deliberated on ways to further strengthen the close bilateral relations between the two countries.

Foreign Secretary Misri underscored Sri Lanka's central role in the implementation of India's 'Neighbourhood First Policy' and 'Vision SAGAR'. In his meetings, Mr. Misri reiterated that India is fully committed to the stability and economic recovery of its strategic neighbor.

He recalled the assistance provided by India during Sri Lanka's recent economic crisis, including financial aid, fuel, medicines, and food supplies, and expressed his commitment to continuing this humanitarian and economic cooperation in the future.
