Kolkata and several south Bengal districts are bracing for light to moderate rainfall as Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu continues its northward trajectory. The storm made landfall on the south Andhra Pradesh coast early Tuesday morning and is expected to weaken progressively over the next few hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Cyclone Murasu crossed the coast between Nellore and Narasapur, near Ongole, between 3:30 AM and 5:30 AM on November 3. Wind speeds during the landfall were recorded between 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kmph.

Storm Weakens After Landfall

As of 8:30 AM on Tuesday, the system was centred over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and was moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 8 kmph. The IMD anticipates the storm will weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon today and further into a deep depression by midnight.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata has issued a bulletin indicating that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at one or two places in Kolkata and various south Bengal districts. This forecast extends until 8:30 AM on Wednesday.

Affected Districts and Outlook

The districts expected to experience this rainfall include North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, and Purulia. Importantly, there are no weather warnings issued for West Bengal in connection with this cyclonic system.

Following this initial spell, the weather across south Bengal is projected to be largely dry from Wednesday until November 9. However, a possibility of light to moderate rain returning to Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, and Nadia exists on November 9 and 10.

North Bengal and Fishermen Advisory

North Bengal is expected to remain predominantly dry. Isolated areas in Darjeeling and Kalimpong might experience light rain or thundershowers until Wednesday morning. The movement of Cyclone Murasu is being closely monitored by Doppler weather radars located in Chennai, Machilipatnam, and Visakhapatnam.

In a precautionary measure, the RMC has advised fishermen against venturing into the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along the south Odisha coast until the end of Tuesday.
