India has achieved a significant milestone in its clean energy transition, exceeding 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity. This achievement places the nation over halfway towards its ambitious 500 GW target set for 2030.

As of July 31, the country's total non-fossil fuel capacity reached 300.50 GW. This substantial contribution means that non-fossil sources now constitute more than 54 per cent of India's total installed electricity generation capacity, which stands at approximately 552 GW.

Solar Dominance in Clean Energy Mix

Solar power continues to be the backbone of India's non-fossil energy portfolio. It accounts for the largest share, with an installed capacity of 164.59 GW. Following solar, wind power contributes 58.14 GW, and hydro power adds 57.24 GW.

The remaining non-fossil capacity is comprised of 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear power. The growth in solar capacity has been particularly remarkable, soaring from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to the current 165 GW. Similarly, wind power capacity has seen robust expansion, increasing from 21 GW in 2014 to 58.14 GW.

Record Capacity Additions Drive Progress

The government reported a record addition of 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity during the 2025-26 fiscal year alone. Solar energy was the primary driver of these additions, contributing 44.6 GW, with wind power adding another 6 GW.

This surge in installed capacity has directly translated into increased renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy generation more than doubled from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26, underscoring the effectiveness of India's clean power initiatives.

Domestic Manufacturing Boosts Solar Output

Accompanying the rise in capacity is a significant expansion in domestic manufacturing for solar equipment. The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar photovoltaic modules now lists a capacity exceeding 200 GW, a dramatic increase from 2.3 GW in 2014.

This growth in local manufacturing is attributed to supportive government measures, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which encourages the domestic production of high-efficiency solar modules.

Path to 2030 Target

With its current non-fossil capacity at 300.50 GW, India needs to add approximately 199.5 GW more to meet its 2030 goal of 500 GW. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is spearheading efforts to achieve this, alongside initiatives focused on reducing industrial emissions and fostering the green hydrogen sector.

The nation is actively implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to establish India as a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
