India's Prime Minister, addressing delegates at the Bloomberg Economic Forum, articulated a powerful vision of "Power to Empower" as the defining characteristic of the 21st century. Speaking at the forum's inaugural session in India, the Prime Minister underscored the transformative potential of technology, data, and knowledge, shifting the focus from mere possession of power to its purposeful application for collective benefit.

The Prime Minister opened his address with a warm welcome to international dignitaries, business leaders, policymakers, and friends, acknowledging the presence of Mr. Bloomberg. He expressed deep personal respect and gratitude for Mr. Bloomberg's long-standing affection and commitment to India, noting how his sentiments consistently contribute positive global energy.

A New Era of Power Defined

The current year's Bloomberg Economic Forum, themed around emerging global powers, provided a fitting backdrop for the Prime Minister's address. He highlighted that while every era has its unique sources and definitions of power, the 21st century, particularly its third decade, is experiencing a profound transformation. In this new paradigm, he stated, Technology is Power, Data is Power, Knowledge is Power, and Innovation is Power.

However, the core of his message revolved around the critical question of how this power is being wielded. The Prime Minister posed crucial queries: Will technology benefit only a select few, or will it create opportunities for millions? Will knowledge remain the preserve of a select group, or will it enhance the capabilities of all? These questions led him to introduce the central idea of the forum: Power to Empower.

The Philosophy of 'Power to Empower'

Elaborating on this concept, the Prime Minister distinguished between different forms of power. He argued that Beyond Power to Control lies Power to Enable. Similarly, Beyond Power to Compete lies Power to Collaborate, and Beyond Power to Succeed lies Power to Help Others Succeed. This vision, he stated, is the driving force behind his engagement at the forum.

He then drew a parallel with ancient Indian traditions, quoting a verse: "Vidya Vivadaya Dhanam Madaya, Shaktih Paresham Paripidanaya; Khalasya Sadhoh Viparitam Etat, Jnanaya Danaya Cha Rakshanaya." The essence of this verse, he explained, is that the true measure of knowledge, wealth, or power lies in its purpose and application. This philosophy, he emphasized, is particularly relevant in today's global landscape.

India's Commitment to Empowerment Through Governance

The Prime Minister asserted that the human spirit of "Power to Empower" is not merely an abstract concept to be preached, but a deeply ingrained lesson from India's thousands of years of tradition. He demonstrated how this philosophy has been integrated into India's governance and work culture, offering examples from within the country.

Digital India: A Catalyst for Inclusion

Highlighting India's democratic heritage, the Prime Minister noted the nation's vast linguistic diversity, numerous publications, and extensive media landscape. He also pointed to the immense penetration of digital platforms, with over five hundred million YouTube users and more than five hundred million Instagram users, fostering open debates and diverse viewpoints.

He recalled that just a decade to thirteen years ago, access to mobile phones and the internet was itself a form of power in India. This limited access meant that whoever had it also had control over information, knowledge, and opportunities. Following the government's focus on making mobile data affordable after 2014, India has witnessed a dramatic shift.

Connecting Opportunities Through Connectivity

The affordability of digital access has opened new avenues for millions. Today, a student in a small town can access digital learning, a village shopkeeper can reach new customers, and a young person can enroll in online courses. This transformation, he emphasized, signifies that connectivity in India has not only connected people but has also connected opportunities, truly embodying the principle of "Power to Empower."

Inclusive Digital Payments Ecosystem

For international guests, the Prime Minister encouraged them to experience India's digital payments ecosystem. He highlighted its strength in inclusivity, where a street vendor and a large car showroom, operating at vastly different scales, can utilize the same digital payments ecosystem. This, he concluded, is the tangible outcome of inclusive technology and a testament to India's commitment to "Power to Empower."
