Rahul Gandhi Slams BJP-RSS Over 'Purification' Ritual

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) regarding an alleged 'purification' ritual performed after a rally by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.

Gandhi linked the act to the mentality of untouchability and discrimination, demanding action and an FIR against the individuals involved under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He asserted that the alleged 'purification' at Haldwani's Ramlila Maidan was not just an insult to one person, but a disrespect to the spirit of the Indian Constitution which abolished untouchability.

'Purification' as Discrimination

“Purification is another name for discrimination,” Gandhi stated, adding that such incidents highlight the pervasive presence of caste discrimination in society. He further accused the BJP and RSS ideology of promoting untouchability and social discrimination in the country.

He emphasized that the Dalit community has faced discrimination for centuries and continues to struggle for social equality. According to Rahul Gandhi, as the success of any Dalit individual in the country increases, so do the attacks and incidents of discrimination against them.

Constitution vs. RSS Ideology

Gandhi framed the entire controversy as a broader ideological battle between the fundamental spirit of the Constitution and the ideology of the RSS. He believes India's true strength lies in its diversity and constitutional equality.

He argued that treating individuals differently based on their identity or social status is against the basic spirit of the Constitution. The controversy began on August 8, following a public meeting by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani.

Timeline of the Controversy

According to reports, two days after the rally, some individuals associated with the Shri Ram Sena allegedly organized a 'purification yagna' and havan at the same venue. The Congress party linked this act to Kharge's Dalit identity, terming it a serious instance of caste-based insult and untouchability.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge himself raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha. He described the alleged purification incident as an insult to him and demanded immediate legal action against those responsible.

Issue of Social Justice

Rahul Gandhi stressed that untouchability is a punishable offense under the Indian Constitution. He also stated that social equality should not be limited to constitutional provisions but should also be reflected in societal behavior.

He demanded strict action in accordance with the law to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. This controversy has now extended beyond a specific venue in Haldwani, with the Congress bringing issues of social justice, Dalit dignity, and the protection of the Constitution back to the center of national political discourse. The incident has also intensified the war of words between the BJP and the Congress.
