A Serendipitous Discovery

In May 2020, Ruby Reynolds, along with her father, made an astounding discovery on the Somerset coast. What began as a typical fossil-hunting excursion turned into a groundbreaking paleontological find. Ruby unearthed bone fragments belonging to the largest marine reptile known to exist.

The newly identified species, named Ichthyotitan severnensis, is estimated to have been an impressive 82 feet long. Its size is comparable to that of a modern blue whale. The discovery was documented in a study published in PLOS ONE.

Unearthing the Past

Justin Reynolds, Ruby's father, recalled finding a four-inch piece of bone. Ruby then discovered another fragment nearby. These fragments turned out to be part of the jawbone of a creature that lived over 200 million years ago.

Photographs of the finds were sent to paleontologist Dean Lomax. Lomax recognized the significance of the fossils and confirmed they belonged to an ichthyosaur, a marine reptile prevalent during the Triassic period.

Piecing Together the Puzzle

The Ichthyotitan severnensis discovery was further enhanced by a partial jawbone found in Somerset in 2016. This earlier fragment was found by collector Paul de la Salle. Lomax said:

"fit together perfectly like an ancient prehistoric jigsaw puzzle."

Comparing Ruby's find to the 2016 fragment revealed that they belonged to the same species. The reassembled jawbones confirmed the immense size and unique structure of the creature.

Revealing the Titan

Further analysis indicated that Ichthyotitan severnensis reached lengths of up to 82 feet. This makes it the largest known ichthyosaur. Lomax stated it was:

"genuinely enormous, about the length of a blue whale."

The bones suggest a streamlined body. Its estimated 10-foot skull and paddle-shaped flippers indicate a creature adapted for long-distance travel and hunting squid-like cephalopods.

Significance of the Discovery

The PLOS ONE publication highlights the importance of this discovery. It provides valuable insights into the growth patterns and evolutionary history of marine reptiles.

While much remains unknown about Ichthyotitan, further excavations could reveal more specimens. Kelsey Stilson said:

"There were things that we can't even possibly imagine in the past...But we can get little hints, and this is one little hint at this larger picture of evolution on Earth."
